Sold.  Now I have more incentive to get this built.  Thanks.

David, a simple teamviewer session and I can have you educated on everything JRiver is less than 30 min (and that includes custom views, customizing Jremote, tagging, etc).

Ted - this sounds very appealing. Would it be feasible to capture it on a video (maybe youtube? or?) for future reference?

And, thank you very much for the info and links below  :thumb:

Thanks

Funny, I was thinking that (video taping a JRIver primer).  I've never done anything like this.

Questions:
*  I have a digital video camera.  I would put it on a tripod over my right shoulder and point it at the monitor, right?  Back light or totally dark room?
*  Is there a free (or cheap) program out there to use to download and maybe edit it on Windows (I use Vista for my home office)
*  Would I then post here as a file download, or is it easy to post on You Tube or Vmeo?

I'm a total newbie....

screengrab program would be even better, but worried cuz you tube "how to video tape your computer screen" videos seem to point people to lots of viruses.

Update:  I think I'm all set.  Windows Vista has a built in Windows encoder program that will record the screen and use a microphone from my webcam.

So.....I plan to make a 10-15 min video that covers JRiver 19 topics:
- make sure your registered
- how to import the library
- tagging techniques
- creating a custom view, and import it to Jremote
- setting up a dac for DSD vs DoP
- offline conversions
- upsampling settings

Anything else? If popular I'd do an advanced one later showing expression language stuff (good for bulk tagging, ridding capitalizations, adding suffioxes to album names, etc)

One suggestion for a Jriver tutorial.

- set up zones that change the output configuration and device based on file/program type. Example: all stereo music files to USB, all video files and multi-channel audio files to HDMI.

You take that one, Russ.  :)  I don't use it for zones nor video.

Ted,

Since you are taking request.  Can you add a section on JRiver optimization.  Will the custom view creation port over to folks who use Gizmo?

This is awesome Ted!  I'm really looking forward to this.  But are you going to do this BEFORE finishing that review we're waiting for?   :P

Hmmm.

Maybe I'll do the Mac version.  I'd have to figure out how to do it.

Jason, my intent was to do a basic JRIver.  Should work for both.  If you want to do it, then ok.  I will step aside.

BTW, I have tried several rough tries and the audio breaks up badly.  I've tried everything I know (bitrate, audio bitrate, reinstall microphone driver, etc.)  I'm getting frustrated.

Jason, to be honest I can never tell your mood.  I will take this as slight sarcasm, but what the heck...who cares, I deserve it.  I think you might be on to something, so now that I have found a different mini-mic that works I will try this tmrw and hopefully have a not-too-huge file to put in my public dropbox or author for you tube.  Then....let's figure out what features or capabilities are different with the MAC version and have you do that as a follow-up.  I have a MAC version too but put the Mini back on the shelf for now.  Thanks
Ted

Ted: double check that all the audio volumes are low enough to prevent clipping. you could try moving the mic away from your face if you don't see any other way to lower the recording volume.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video, smells like a sticky topic for the circle!

Thanks.  It seemed like the mic itself; I tried to clip it on purpose, set it low gain, etc.  I think I;m fine now.

Gang, I am by no means a JRIver expert, just have lots of experience (but audio only, period)....so a video will be a nice intro to other folks (ex. is Jason on Mac) who have better tweaks or different ways to skin the cat.  JRiver is so comprehensive that there are often multiple ways to do the same thing (i.e the convert function is in the main menu and also in right-clicking).  We'll see.  This first one will be a rough cut.  :)

Upate:  I spent a lot of time on this today, and never got any of my mics (including a nice pro mic and Centrance Micport PRo USB preamp) to work with Microsoft Impressions Screen Capture.  It breaks up like crazy!! I tried every imaginable combination of gain, resolution, bitrates, etc etc.  The software seems unstable at best.  Argh!  So I found a program that looked promising called EZVID, downloaded it late this afternoon, got playing with it, and then tonight tried a couple rough drafts.  When I finally felt like I had a decent script in my head I made a 22 minute video...which crashed as it was being, well, encoded I guess, and when EZVID came back up it was blank!!!!  It's now 11:30pm and I'm done for tonight.  :(

If anyone has a better program, or knows why my stuff crashed, lemme know.  I've done the JRiver walk thru now a couple times and feel that it's now the least of my worries.

I'm about to give Windows Server 2012 and the Audiophile Optimizer a try!

I'm wondering how powerful the processor needs to be in my audiopc.

I have an older computer (Core 2 Duo, SATA) that I'm not currently using that could work, but is there a audible benefit in having a more modern processor (Core i5/Core i7) in the audiopc?

I've used Apowersoft Free Screen Recorder.  It seems to work well but is very basic and doesn't have any annotation tools like the paid Pro version.  It also only outputs a .wmv file so if you want a more platform compatible file type, you would need to convert it with another program.  In fact, it looks like they don't offer it any more on their website, instead offering a trial version of Pro which may be different (?), but it is still available for download from CNET in the above link.  If you do download it, use the Direct Download Link to bypass the CNET Installer.
