I'm currently building the TSE, and will probably build the SSE at some point next year.

There are other choices for diy tube amps, but the tubelabs stuff have a good reputation so I am hopeful for the end result.

You are right. I was starting to delve into the myriad of tube amp designs and was finding myself getting both confused and frustrated. Think I'm just going to go with the Tubelab SPP with the EL84 and see where it takes me. Rather then starting out building a point to point amp off a schematic, I think it will make more sense to go with the Tubelab PCB. His forum on diyAudio is strong, and George himself seems to offer some useful support.

Even if this first amp isn't the perfect match, how wrong could it really be?

I built a SSE some years ago and am still using it in a highly modified form, but it's about to be replaced by p-t-p wiring and KT150 power tubes...

In any case, the pcb is a little on the thin side for r&r'ing tubes but they don't tend to break and in both the SSE and TSE there are layout issues as far as hot parts being placed too near to caps. Other than that great amps and lots of support with an entire tubelab forum over on diyaudio.

Also, if you build a KT88 SET buy 2 sets of cathode resistors and some EL34s too, I like the EL34 better... more natural and less hi-fi sounding in my system.
