iPhone 5S upgrade?
« on: 27 Sep 2013, 05:45 pm »
Consdering to upgrade to the new but basically same iPhone  :nono: curious to know how many are jumping on the bandwagon or waiting for the next newer generation.  I know the newer phone has better specs, camera, processor etc etc but is it worth the cost?

Thanks~

Is there anything you don't like about your current phone that you would get in the 5S? I've been an Iphone user for 3-4 years starting with the 3GS and have the 4s. Very disappointed the 5S screen size is only 4" and I migrated to the Galazy S4 6 weeks ago and am happy. My main need was larger screen size which I knew I wasn't getting in the 5s.

So far really happy with larger screen size and phone overall. If the Iphone 6/6s is 5" I would consider going back 2 years down the road when I'm eligible for next upgrade.

I'm getting it.  I hate the swipe/password lock on my current iPhone, and am really looking forward to it just reading my fingerprint to unlock when I press the home button.

Of course my current 5 is through work, and the 5S will be through them as well.  So definitely worth the price (ie, free).  :)

I've heard a number of complaints regarding the battery life of the phones running the new software. I also went android for the larger screen.

Just got the 5 in January after owning a 3GS for several years. No need to upgrade to the 5S. I imagine my next phone will be the iPhone 8 or whatever is out in 3 years.

I don't know why Apple didn't at least provide the option of a larger screen.  I find my wife's iPhone's screen to be tiny, as compared to my droid bionic's.  I may get the new Nokia phone, with the killer camera, if it comes to Verizon.

I agree with you but when I answered my wife's iPhone 5 I could believe the sound quality compared to my Droid's.  All of them.  She also gets much better service than me in our house.  My 5s is on order.

We will be getting the iPhone 5S but we're waiting for the dust to clear at the local Verizon outlet.  Currently we use the old 4 units.  Yesterday, I loaded i0S7 on my device just to make the transition smoother.

Because they wanted it to be possible to operate the device with one hand, which isn't all that easy with the big Samsung ones (I've tried). I like tablets but don't want my phone to try to be one.

BTW the photos in the Nokia "killer camera" advertising were faked. This article is just one of many you'll find if you search "Nokia fake photo" or a similar term. Still want it?

To each his own. I have an upgraded 4S and certainly don't need anything bigger. Women can carry something larger.
My wife and I are not ones to keep upgrading. As far as features the new fingerprint BS has been hacked already.
Next phone may be an Android in another year.
What Apple should fix is some kind of persistant visual and sound reminder you got and missed a call. It seems like it would be simple enough.

I have an Android and my wife has an iPhone 5.  I'm waiting for my 5s.

There are apps for missed calls but yes a light like the Motorola would be nice.

You were told wrong. This phone is faster with it's A7 processor and will run 64 bit software when that comes around. The fingerprint reader is very cool and Siri is much improved.

I may be wrong, but 64bit support is only relevant or even meaningful if you are trying to run applications that consume more than 3GB memory (i.e. more than a typical 32bit processor can handle). The iPhone 5S has a sum total of 1GB RAM which effectively makes this a marketing gimmick. At best, it will support future 64bit apps as long as those apps stay well within the 1GB limit. But one would imagine that those apps would very well have a 32bit version to support older iPhones, and so that point too becomes moot. For these limited hypothetical apps, you might end up seeing 5-10% performance improvement because they are running in 64bit mode, but that's about it.

Edit: Calling it a marketing gimmick may be a bit harsh. It is the first step that Apple is taking towards a 64bit future, but that is several years away, and as things stand right now, 64 bitness in mobile phones has no practical value. To contrast this with the PC world, 64bit support was introduced several years ago, and even to date, most apps are still 32 bit. That's because they don't need that much memory.

I agree with the size comments above.  We just upgraded for the iPhone 4 to the 5s.  The longer size is my only issue with it.  In my smaller hand it now takes two hand perform some task that were performed with only my thumb on the slightly small iPhone 4.  I've started to adjust to the way I hold it and its working out.

Over all the upgrade has been a very positive experience.  Note: After loading ios7 on my old iPhone 4, it turned into a slow unresponsive brick.  Yet, it helped me make a smooth transition the 5s.  Also Best Buys gave us a $120.00 per phone trade in value based on the condition of our old iPhone 4's.

This is why I am not upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS7. Now I just have to wait until my contract is up in January to get an upgrade to a 5S.

Asliarun, you are correct.  A 64-bit processor by itself offers no inherent advantages in an application ecosystem that does not rely on > 2GB memory and 64-bit arithmetic.

Having said that, the A7 processor is significantly faster than the A6 processor, has hardware acceleration support for certain kinds of complex cryptographic functions, has way faster GPU support and includes a low power motion co-processor.

As for the long term, the A7 is designed around the ARMv8 architecture, which is where ARM is putting a significant amount of R&D.  ARM is investing in server class capability into its ARMv8 architecture, and Apple will only benefit from that kind of investment.  Moving to 64-bit ARM now means Apple will more easily integrate ARM innovation in the future.

Tactically it was the right move, the A7 chip is an across the board improvement over the A6, nevermind whether it's 64 bit or not.  And strategically it's also the right move.

I have a 4 on ios7. It was retarded slow until I reset some stuff. I think i cloud destroys it.

I just got 7.0.3 but it didn't help.

I have 7 on my 4 and it is only a bit slower.  Overall not bad for a three year old phone and what 3-4 os updates.
In fact I think I'm still faster with a home button press and swipe than his 5s finger print sensor, if not pretty close.
I'd have a 5s but they don't have any

I have a 5s which replaced my HD Razr.  This is my first iPhone and I can say that I'm very impressed.  I finally understand the iPhone addiction.
