Speaker Cabling Question
« on: 5 Jul 2013, 07:24 pm »
I have on order a Bryston 4B-SST2 power amp along with a pair of ProAc Response D30R floorstanding speakers.  The rest of my system includes: Bryston BDP-2/BDA-2, Bryston BCD-1, Rega RP6 turntable/Dynavector DV-20X2 Low MC cart, Linn Akurate Kontrol pre-amp and Linn Uphorik phono stage.

I'm looking for a pair of top-quality, neutral, speaker cables but something not too bulky that will work great with my system.

Looking at the Bryston store, I can get the Bryston bi-wire speaker cables for roughly $500 for a pair of 12 foot lengths with banana plugs.  If I look at some of the high-end speaker cables, I'm looking at roughly: $2,400 for BIS Audio, $1,600-$2,400 for Siltech and $1,000-$2,000 for Transparent Audio just to name a few.

What sonic improvements or sonic qualities  can I expect if I were to go for the higher-end models that would not be possible with the Bryston cables?  That is, what is gained with the higher-end speaker cables?

Please note that I'm no expert in this field and every time I visit a new audio dealer, I get a different story...   :?

I run a 4Bsst, BP-25 pre-amp and BCD-1 into B&W 803 Diamonds so we are pretty close but I don't know your speakers.  I would characterize myself as an amateur compared to most on this site but I will give you my perspective.  First and foremost I think the choice is a very personal thing, just like the difference between McIntosh and Bryston or B&W vs PMC.  It is all fine stuff but they do give you a very different sonic experience.  I also think the differences are far less with speaker cables and it may be a category where you will see the least bang for your buck.  I would think speakers 1st, pre-amp second then your amp and source, then interconnects and finally speaker cables - I may get beat up for that priority list but that was my experience.

FWIW once you are dealing with quality cables I think the resistance in the cables is the most important factor i.e. the longer the run the heavier duty wire you need.  I am not going to suggest you may not hear some minor differences as you pay more money for cables but I think the point of diminishing returns kicks in pretty fast once you start spending more than Bryston speaker cables cost.  They are a great value if you want transparent neutral sound.  If you are going to invest an additional $1,500 to $2,000 in cables beyond what Bryston charges you may want to consider if speaker cables are the best place to spend that money.

While not a direct comparison I was using Transparent Ultra balanced interconnects and decided to try Bryston.  To my ear it was like I lifted a veil from my speakers and I much preferred the Bryston interconnects and they were maybe 1/5th the cost.  My better half's comment was the Bryston sounded more like a live concert.

I have the 4bsst2 and for a couple years ran Canare 4s11 cables.  No real complaints but was curious and decided to try Morrow Audio speaker cables. I have been using their interconnects and was really happy with them.

I got the SP 6 versions and wow!  Lots of new detail and very smooth and liquid. Sometimes when playing records featuring trumpet or sax I miss the raw  bite of the  Canares, but in general the Morrow SP 6 are much more enjoyable. You could check out the SP 4 of which there is a pair on A-gon right now. No connection to seller.

I use the Morrow Garand reference 6 for my interconect and Bryston speaker cable.
For my home theater I'm using Morrow Sp4 on the front speakers driven by a 9BSST/2.

If you're going to spend more cash on cables, I prefer UPOCC copper and a low inductance geometry...  :thumb:
