I have had a similar experience.  I borrowed a Firefly to try on my Sony laptop and couldn't get it to work at all.

It sounds great when it works , but I have become so frustrated with it I just took it out of my system altogether. I even purchased a firefly tail (not sure if that's what they call it), which is an extension for the firefly out of the USB but that does not help any. I really needed it on the mac mini and for that it's a flop.

I assume you mean the Dragonfly?  Have you compared the Audio Midi Settings for the device on the Mini vs the Laptop?  Perhaps the default format is set to 192KHz?  Try 44.1KHz/16bit to see if you get any sound with that setting.

I don't know what sugbob tried, but I tried every audio setting and device playback options and nothing worked.

I did that change and it still didn't work.  I returned it to my friend and borrowed a USB MyDac from another friend which works perfectly.
