Toshiba laptop
« on: 4 Jun 2013, 05:31 pm »
Can someone tell me what to look for in a laptop to be used exclusively for music? I don't want a Mac and I'd rather stay under $600. Cheaper is better for me.
Thank you

I know this is above your price point, but its worth the extra scratch and has everything you need for a good five years.  Buying a cheap laptop will only have to be replaced soon because of the ever changing internet.

Hi, I'm curious as to what you mean by the ever changing internet causing the replacement of computer hardware such as a laptop?

Thanks

I recently picked up a used netbook exclusively for audio use.

I wanted 2GB RAM, a reasonably fast processor, and a 250GB drive and gigabit ethernet.  I actually store my 1.5TB of FLAC on a USB drive, but wanted a fairly large drive in the event I changed my mind.

I deleted all MS off it that I could, loaded up Logitech Media Server, and I run it wired.

Was less than $180 off Kijiji.

I use a Win 7 HP laptop that I picked up for about $600.  It has 8G of RAM (for memory playback), 750G drive (for some music storage), Blu-ray (for ripping hi-rez FLAC from BD discs) and enough processing power to do multi-channel DSD to PCM processing via HDMI on the fly.  I run Fidelizer at bootup, open Jriver and it works great for everything I play, including DSD and multi-channel files.

An example is the small screen from laptops that are useless in many current site that show a widescreen, unless your eyes are a microscope.

Iam using now a 20inches monitor and it is small in many site, it not show all the page, so Iam forced walk the bars.
Today a minimum monitor to internet it 24inches, my neighbour use a 27inches TV for PC and YouTube.

I don't see why you need anything too big or expensive.

I have the least expensive Acer 15.6" laptop from BB that I've been using for 3 years trouble free almost every day. Can't see why you would need anything more than the $350 one with a 500gb HD ($70) - especially if it's only for music. Just get dbPoweramp or like I did, JRiver and back it up with a external. Should be trouble-free.

(I have about 5K FLAC songs loaded taking up 150GB.)

You really don't need a heavy duty, or ultra current, laptop to set it up as a music player.  If you use Linux you can get away with even lower spec hardware and still get the job done nicely.  $300 should be enough to get you a nice laptop and an external drive for your music.  Maybe take the money you don't spend on the laptop and buy a 2nd external drive to backup your music files.
