I'm tempted to say get a set of car speakers and car woofers and slap them in some boxes, because that is how the music is mixed in the studio.

Ooops I guess I did say that

If the goal is to copy what the studio engineer hears, perhaps and pair of active professional monitors, like Mackies would be in order.  Others here have comments on their positive attributes.

I just heard Neat Mystiques with a Naim Nait 5/Flatcap II/Naim CD 5 at Emil's (fellow circle member)and it absolutely ripped!  Hands down the best presentation for rock I have ever heard.  You will know what killer PRAT is when you hear this system and whether Metallica was played or Astrud Gilberto, it was always supremely engaging, impeccably timed, and just made you forgot about stupid audio criticism.  I've never heard such complex rhythmic arrangements pulled apart and nailed with such aplomb.  This little system will shame most $$$$ systems when it comes to rock n roll.

I second PSB...

I have owned the PSB Stratus Silver i's and Stratus Gold i's, and I can say without hesitation that these are very nice speakers on their own and fantastic "rock" speakers.  (I can say this as I listen to ~70% rock/30% classical and opera).  The Gold i's are, obviously, better and make good use of the larger 10" bass driver.

Since upgrading to my Merlin VSM-MM's, I have not yet sold my pair of PSB stratus gold i's  on audiogon.  If you or anyone wants them, I will give you a TREMENDOUS deal.  I have 80 ebay positive feedbacks from 74 users and a feedback rating of 39 on audiogon with NO neutrals or negatives on EITHER site.  (Ebay user ID: riverred105; Audiogon: jwells).  If anyone wants these, I thought I would give my fellow audiocircler's a shot at them before putting them up on audiogon.  I figure I'll let these speakers go for less than 1k.  For this price, these speakers are an incredible bargain.

If anyone wants to talk further, please feel free to post here or email me at: wellsjason@gmail.com .
Thanks much,
Jason

At your price point, I second the recommendation of Infinity. Top pick for value are the used Prelude series, then the newer series with the Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragms, followed by the older Kappa series.

The cabinets definitely need beefing up and you should replace the series caps with something "softer" sounding such as the Kimbers, but this is a very cost-effective way to go. They move air, are efficient, and are pretty clean for mass-produced stuff (once modified). If you prefer the grunge sound of rock at full-tilt volume the CMMD drivers will give more detail of that raw rock "edginess" than the PSB or Paradigm goods. A friend of mine owned the Kappa 9.1 and now owns Klipsch for playing his Metallica. He wishes he still had his Kappas. His only complaint was they were too power hungry (they dip down to around 1 ohm in the mid bass).

I suggest the PSB or Paradigms for overall nuetrality, and the Infinitys for all-out rock histrionics. The cabinets, as always, are a major weak point of any mass produced speaker.
