IRD purist used would be a great value..  for something around 150 dollars the luminous audio axiom preamp has received rave reviews.

you might have to define what "good" and "cheap" mean for you...

I'm looking in the $100-$200 range. Good=sounds good. I own a tube-modded 999es.

Gongos,

Are you handy?  I just bought all the parts to build a 5687 (same tube as Dan Wright uses in the Modded 999) based preamp.  Total parts are well under $200.   It is suppose to be a very linear and dynamic tube based preamp.   I'll let you know how it sounds when it is complete.  It looks fairly straight forward to build.

Look for a used Creek OBH12.  A great remote controlled passive preamp.

Just be carefull with tubes.  They run at high voltage.  I always put bleed resistors on the high voltage caps, otherwise the power just stays stored in the cap.  Could give a REALLY nasty shock.

Yeah I have read that before, actually in this tutorial that Yeo writes on how to build this preamp he states that more than once and at the beginning.

I'm looking for something similar. I would like a Pre with a Phonstage for under $200 to hook up to a 5ch. B&K amp.

Any suggestions? Maybe a receiver with Pre Outs?
