Hi all Audio Circle members.
Believe it or not, my first sub-woofer was a Sony with a 4" driver with a same size passive radiator with a 30 watts built-in amplifier.
It was part of a mini stereo system with bookshelves and a main unit with top slip-in CD and AM-FM tune.
Paid 650 Cnd $ about 10 years ago.
I still have it and use it for back ground music.

Velodyne FSR18

Still have it, though I'm seriously thinking of replacing it with 4 12" GRResearch/Rythmik subs (multi sub setup).

A 15" JBL driver in a DIY enclosure from an "Audio" (now defunct) mag article.

Still have it, retired, in my basement.

My first was a DIY isobaric, built in 1981.   Two KEF B-139 woofers, lots of internal volume (I used the isobaric loading to lower the system cutoff rather than to reduce the box size).   Learning experience.

Mine was a DIY isobaric design built out of an old hifi rack my father had, 1" MDF. Made a 1.2cf ported enclosure, installed two ORIGINAL Pyramid Phase III 10" subwoofers (the clear ones), powered with an old SAE A205 amp. This little thing sounded amazingly good and played deeper and cleaner than my brother's dual dbx db-SW15's from DAK. Those things actually sucked. He used to get pissed because listening to the same pipe organ disc on my system and his, mine went much lower and stronger, plus you could hear the actual notes, not a mumbled up, one-note blob like his dbx subs, and he was using all Carver equipment.

That sub started to self-destruct by the screws that held the baffle to the enclosure stripping out. My fix?... Six 24" bar clamps! LOL I actually used them as legs and flipped the sub so it became down-firing!  :thumb:

My first "store bought" sub was a pair of Earthquake SuperNova 10" subs. They were okay, but didn't get too loud before bottoming out, didn't dig too deep before running out of steam, walked all over the floor like the Sunfire subs, but sure as heck were not anything like the performance of the Sunfire subs.

I bought a Sunfire and it was pretty cool, but due to my 2 wire (no ground) electrical feed in the apartment, it hummed and wouldn't auto shut down.  Pulling the plug to turn it off gave you a HUGE thump.   Gave it to a buddy of mine in Jefferson City and he's still digging it even though it's turned up way too loud.

Bought a PE sub kit and the amp broke twice so it is just sitting on the floor until I think of something to do with it.

Am a bit late to the party, but thought I'd go ahead and post.

My first sub was an a/d/s M3 that I bought new in the mid 1990's.

It was replaced in 2003 by an SVS 16-46PC+ in 2003.

I still have the a/d/s, but it's just being used as a side table (the mahogany finish is beautiful!).

Hi all Audio Circle members.
Now that I think of it,
my very first sub woofer was one of those small desktop
computer subwoofer with two (Left and right) satellite full range
mini speakers.
The amplified woofer is 4 inches bass reflex
and the satellite speakers are maybe 2.5" sealed.
I still have it and use it, not with my computer, but with my iPod.
However, I have real subwoofers (I have two),
Rythmik servo sealed 12" model F12G and I like them,
use them and keep them.

The first real sub I had was a Decware "House Wrecker". It wasn't all that good IMO but I used some spare 15" mid woofers, not really LF drivers.

I. M. Fried Model M's.  Fried was a fan of mass loaded transmission lines and these were the monitor version of the 'famous' Model H coffin (coffee table sized/shaped) dual channel sub.

These were 8 inch woofers (don't know the brand/model) that came in a $500 USD kit (1980).  The box with air core inductors and special foam blocks was 16 cu. ft.  The finished cabinets were 2 ft wide, 3 ft tall, and 1 foot deep.  They were designed specifically for the Model B (LS3/5A clone) 2-way stand mounts with the B's mounted directly over the front facing woofer (located in the top/inside corner).  The M's were passive, but rated to 114 dB at 17 Hz and I believe it.  They overpowered our living/dining room, but with a 20 watt NAD 3020 and the B's sounded marvelous in a 20,000 cu. ft. chapel.  My finish carpentry skills (and the lack of modern veneering products) resulted in a very amateurish appearance.  I've been a MLTL fan ever since.

My 1st sub was a 40w Basebite II had it playing with some 40w Curtis HTiB speakers. I wouldn't call it a sub but it did add boomy low notes. Upgrade to a Bic F12, then a SB13-Ultra  :thumb: Total $$ spent on subs $240.oo  :green:

Audio Pro B2-50 mated to Dahlquist DQ-10s on DIY, solid 1.5"-thick walnut stands. Everything was stolen at the same time.  And thus I began the next leg of my journey.   :green:

The drug-addled numbnuts that stole it did not know enough to take the special connecting cable.  They also took an Allied receiver but left a McIntosh 6100. Guess they were too tired (or their truck was full) after also taking my TV and microwave and numerous other items.

Love those Audio Pro subs, :thumb:

Owned a B1 45 for a few years. They didn't hit as hard as most new designs but they were very musical.

M & K Bottom End II  12" passive, adjustable x-over.  It worked well with my SpeakerLab .1's.  When I upgraded to Madisound MDY 3, the woofer seemed slow, so I sold it.  Still own the .1 and the mdy3, but they are in storage.
