What was your first Subwoofer?
« on: 1 May 2013, 08:12 pm »
Mine was a huge 15" BSR down firing end table looking thing that I bought from DAK at their liquidation sale. I bought the matching satellite speakers and all three were under $200.00.  I hooked them up to a Kenwood receiver and the TV and had fun watching movies and such.  It sure could rumble and go deep.

My first true sub was a Plus C Canton sub which I still have.  It is a 12" sealed and is passive and is mated with a pair of Canton Satellites from 1991 and it shows how much things have progressed in 22 years.

An Orion 12 inch car woofer.  I took the back seat out of my Camry, and mounted that 12 IB across the mouth of the trunk.  Fed it 300w from a DEI amp, and had a lot of fun.

My first house sub was a Yamaha YST model with a 7 inch spruce cone, and a 90w amp.  It led me to consider my car audio days, and put me full throttle into DIY sub solutions for the home ever since.

Hi.

I will be very interested to read stereophiles using active sub for their stereo amp. No home theatre for me, please.

My first house sub was a Yamaha YST model with a 7 inch spruce cone, and a 90w amp.

Was it a stereo amp or a home theatre amp?

Here is mine. It pretty much stunk as a subwoofer. Got rid of it and have still not replaced it yet.

The DBX, is identical to the BSR and believe both were owned by DAK industries...what a small world we inhabit!

This one only had 2-6" woofers in it. Didn't go real low. Actually I preferred the Baby Advent IIs with the 6.5" woofers over using it with the sub.

Same Cabinet design and DBX and BSR were the same company in the 80's and early 90's before Harmon Industries took over. The single 15" wasn't too bad, but was a bit woofy by today's standards.

My first were a pair of Adire Audio Koda 10 inch subs-too bad I sold them given how much importance I give to multisub systems.

Best,
Anand.

Design Acoustics PS-LF

12" sealed passive sub packaged with little monitors. Still have the cabinet though the driver is long since toast. Plan to use it for an isobaric sub with a couple of PE clearance drivers I picked up. The monitors are still in use and sound great (gotta love rubber surrounds).

My first was a Mirage 150(dual 8"s) I believe.
Had some small Mirage speakers that mated with it.
I was awe struck as to how much lower a sub could go than my small sats.
Was hooked after that, then went to DD-15's,F-113's and FINALLY the 1812,end of search :thumb:..

Cheap Jack, the 90w was a built in subwoofer amp inside the Yamaha.

I used it with both Yamaha pro logic surround and a Sugden integrated amp.

I started out with surround sound in 1994, but scaled back to 2 channel (including a sub).

Only this year, have I setup a 5.1 surround set again.

Before I had my first home, I put 2 - 12" JBL drivers surface mounted in the reinforced back deck of a VW Jetta GLI controlled by an AudioControl EQX and driven by a Rockford Fosgate Amp.  The back deck looked like a stock black deck with no speaker grills.

When I bought my first house, I bought an M&K MX-100.  Had it for many years.

Sounds like something for the Mobile Audio Circle!

It was a nice clean car system for the day.  All reinforcements were color-matched to the car.  Even had one of the first trunk mounted Sony CD changers which was novel for the day.

The car was taken to the dealership for a heater core recall and then the system was stolen within a week after the service call.  The thieves went straight for the trunk with a crow bar where most of the gear was installed (and invisible from the outside).  The thieves trashed what they could not uninstall (I went to great lengths to make sure things were bolted down well).  No one in town knew I had the system until the car went to the dealership for the recall.  The dealership even charged me an extra $100 labor because of the extra wiring in the dash.

The thieves did not find the amps that were mounted upside down, bolted to the underside of the front bucket seats (off of the floor and carpet).  I had a SoundStream head unit in a pullout sleeve with a blank dash cover that also didn't get.  Everything else was stolen or trashed (including the new car ).
