« on: 5 Apr 2013, 12:09 am »
I am shopping for a cd transport/cd player to feed my BDA-1 dac. I have a small budget of
$600-$1000. Used is fine and probably the way to go. Anyone have any ideas for me?
Thanks In Advance.

I would go with a computer with a good soundcard. Use the USB output and I recommend VLC media player which you can download. By using the computer you can control the wave strength in the Master Volume Control.

I also use a Sony Blu-ray BDP-S185 $70.00 CDN which sounds as good to me as using the computer.

The source IMO will be the sound characteristic you hear. So if you're looking for a warm sounding player you'll have to try and find one that suits you're liking. My Sony NS9100ES is warm sounding. 8)

One of my favorites that is not terrible expensive when I had my BDA-1 and I still use it is a Marantz DV9600.  For a bit I had it in a secondary system and brought it back for use as a CD transport.  I might even know someone who still has one.  If CDs were my going to be my main source going forward, I'd look to get another one.  I use a music server with a DSD DAC now.

If I had a $1000 limit for a new CD transport I would roll the dice on a new Musical Fidelity M1 CDT. I have never heard one, but for the dough it looks to be well laid out.

If used and under 3 years old, an Audio Note CDT Zero.

No on the computer.  :nono:

Yes, I too would recommend Audio Note...you won't go wrong with Philips PRO2 transport and tubes. Another good company with this mix is from Audio Research Reference transport.

larevoj,

I don't think you can get a Phillips CDpro2 based transport for under $1000 without building it yourself. The mechanism itself is almost $400.

Yup, you can and there are DIY kits available.

However, I am not sure how good the diy kit will sound...
