I'm still a big fan of "Some Girls". I think I've worn out a couple of cassettes and LPs over the years. It was one of those classic touch stone albums in the late 70's sound track of my life getting through school. It is also their last great album, imho. Beyond this point, I really prefer Keith's solo albums.

Some Girls was the Stones looking at punk with a cocked eyebrow and a smirk on their faces and asking " Who's your daddy? "
Undercover is starting to get some love these days, too. It always amused me that when that album came out, people couldn't get over the violent imagery. They were shocked, I say...shocked ! Imagine ....the Rolling Stones as nasty bad boys. Unheard of!

The Stones are able to scratch a certain itch that only the Stones can scratch. When things get itchy in that certain way... the Stones are the way to go, as nobody else can seem to touch that spot.

Keith Richards' solo albums are kind of like Mick Taylor's solo albums: eh.

The late Brian Jones and all of the Mick Taylor era is when they were at their Stoneleyist (to coin a word).

The Ron Wood era - well, when Bill Wyman says it's time to give it up that's good enough for me.

That was almost the Shuggie Otis era...yeah, I know : "Who's Shuggie Otis ? " Think " Strawberry Letter #23 ". I believe he also did a stint with Zappa around Hot Rats. He turned the Stones down. Chutzpah.

I'm a fan of rhe Stones and love the guitar work Mick Jones did but I also like Ron Wood. He's a perfect guitarist for the Stones and he fits in well with the party vibe of the band had for much of his era and the funky geezer vibe of the current lineup.

Roy Buchanon was a great guitarist but he would have been a disaster in the Stones. I don't think his playing would have suited the band and I have to think the endless supply of drugs the band had on hand during that era would not have worked out well with Roy's appetite for such things.

The Stones are well past their prime but Mick and company can still put on a good show...in their 60's! Keef has taken lot of heat over his drug use and sloppy image but he's written more memorable and classic Rock riffs than anyone. There is magic in that open G tuning! Is it possible to play an electric guitar in open G and NOT sound like you are imitating Keith?

There was a great Brit guitarist named Dave Ball who did a stint with Procol Harum after Robin Trower and he would have been great with the Stones.

The Stones are at the core a Blues R&B group that rocks. Whenever the try to branch out from that they generally fall on their face. These are the three best Stones albums, you need buy nothing more. In fact you don't really need to buy more than Let it Bleed to understand the Stones. I dismiss all of the other commercial releases like Goats Head Soup, Tattoo You, Undercover etc. as the Rolling Stones empire generating cash for the machine. They really did put out way more trash than good music, but the good stuff, oh man, that's good.

Sticky Fingers - Not a bad effort

For Video, I really don't like too much, but "Let's Spend the Night Together" (film), "Some Girls Live from Texas", and for something a little different, "Muddy Waters & The Rolling Stones - Live At The Checkerboard Lounge" are all acceptable.
