Yep! If you look closely at most of Keith's Tele's you can see the missing string. I was at Victoria Amplifiers in Naperville and picked up a beat up Tele next to an amp. I noticed the E string was missing and when I tried to play it, it sounded strangely out of tune. Mark, the owner picked it up and played the opening riff from Can't You Hear Me Knocking. It sounded awesome! When I got home, I tuned a guitar to open G and realized how easy it was to play Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Woman, and so many Stones songs. I still can't play Can't You Hear Me Knocking! But I can play the cool riff.

Keith makes it look easy but he has come up with more cool Rock riffs than anyone, including Chuck Berry. Once I figured out the open G, it was a blast.

Come on... I've seen that clip several times and I wouldn't call it taking anyone to school. Chuck is known for his eccentricity and that clip is a good example. Keith was very respectful and the song was classic Berry. Schooling someone on how to play a Chuck Berry song. I'd love to see CB try to play any Stones song. That would be a more entertaining video.

I love Chuck Berry but he has only written one or two riffs that he recycled into so many songs. Johnny B Good, Maybelline, Carol, sweet little sixteen...all great songs. All, pretty much the same song. Now that i think of it, i love them all.

Chuck Berry was the Jimi Hendrix of the 50s.
I switched over from Brahms to Chuck Berry when I found my mom's collection of 45s as a kid.
My guess is Keith was a bit unsure how to act with Berry being so overbearing - not his finest moment.

The irony is that they show Keith talking about how CB probably doesn't even know how he good he was, and then cut to...

CB acting like he knew EXACTLY how good he was, and then some.

Growing up , the bad boys were kickin'. And when a new album Came out, you never even thought on it .. you just went and bought it. They really were one GREAT BAND. Hands down KILLER... Never to be Equalled . Hot Rocks, Exile,, Goats Head, Some Girls.. Good Lord,,,,on and on and on .......

This bring back memories of buying Sticky Fingers when it just came out and my stepfather flipping out and ripping the album cover open to expose the guy in his underwear.
This was right around the time they ripped up my copy of Steal This Book and covered it with lawn clippings.
I believe this coincides with the time my copy of Plastic Ono Band was ripped off of the turntable when I was found happily listening to Working Class Hero.
Ahhh, the joys of Junior High School...
Yeah, the Stones were great back then!
Brown Sugar is still one of my favorite songs.

Too funny. Reminds me of when my mom ripped "Live Peace In Toronto" off the turntable because I had it up so loud I didn't hear her come home from grocery shopping. She said she could hear it a block away as she turned the corner in the Impala wagon.

My parents must have trashed the book before I got that far.
I do remember the part about sticking a dead fish in a safety deposit box at the bank.
I also remember my parents catching me trying to scotch tape the book back together. They were not amused.
They seemed to be pretty grouchy back then, as I recall. Maybe it was my habit of playing Alice Cooper's "Killer", Hot Tuna's "First Pull Up, Then Pull Down" and then the Rolling Stones "Through The Past, Darkly" every day, without fail, for two years in a row that made them that way. Who knows.

My brother hooked up a little switch on our front door so that when our parents opened the screen door, a red light would come on in our listening room downstairs and we would turn the music down!

Hi Al.

I notice Let it Bleed is generally appearing in most of our "best Stones albums" list. It is also my favourite Stones LP.

Interestingly, guitar virtuoso, Ry Cooder not only played on Let it Bleed, but had a big influence in its "sound". Would you believe he was mooted as a potential permanent member. Thank God that didn't happen (for the sake of both careers). I can't see how Cooders fanatical approach to "music" would have melded too well with the Stones cavalier lifestyle. I have read in interviews with Cooder, that he doesn't look upon the experience at all fondly. Partly (I think), because he did have a sizable input on Let it Bleed but received no formal recognition and partly because ................

................as jackman said "There is magic in that open G tuning! Is it possible to play an electric guitar in open G and NOT sound like you are imitating Keith?"..... Well guess what, Ry Cooder showed "Keef" how that open G tuning really worked and helped him perfect the sound. Again, at the time, Ry received no recognition for helping setup Keith's "sound". I must admit when reading that interview with Ry, thinking that it may have been a slight case of sour grapes. Amazingly though, much much later, I think in the 90's, I was reading an in depth interview with Keith. In it he confirmed Ry Cooder played a significant hand on Let it Bleed and in fact taught him the secrets of open G playing!!! He also confirmed they briefly considered offering Ry a spot in the Stones.

They used to stick a mirror under Keith's nose for other reasons. Now they do it to make sure he's still breathing. He looks bad in that picture.

Mick still gets around better than guys half his age, although he looks more like Don Knotts every year.

I love the Stones because I remember when they were relevant. They were the biggest band in to world for a long time...a long time ago. My feelings for the band are because of what they did in the 70's. without that frame of reference, it's easy to overlook their greatness. They are geezers these days.

I still consider a string of their records from the 70's to be among the greatest rock albums in history. Let it bleed, sticky fingers, some girls, exile on main st, get yer yaya's out, beggars banquet, etc. I can't think of any band other than the Beatles, who put out such great stuff at the height of their popularity. Also, Keith knew how to play guitar long before Ry Cooter sat in on a couple songs during Let it bleed but the open G really changed his sound. Please remember Cooter didn't invent or pioneer open G. It has been used by musicians, especially blues guys for years.
