Why I can never be a Stones fan

Every once and a while one of their good songs will come on and I think, wow, I should go buy some Stones albums, and then this video pops back into my mind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G4jnaznUoQ and I think, well, that passed, again. On David Bowie, well it's David Bowie, and it makes sense. But Mick being in that video just ruined the Stones for me.

Still can't believe Satisfaction was written in like '63 or something, that song was ahead of its time. Must have just come out of nowhere, the impact.

How about good live concert blurays or dvd's from up to say mid 80's? Or later if they're good.

Might I suggest a stop in the port of free streaming before sailing to the Amazon? You may get a better sense of exactly which albums you like before plunking down your hard earned cashish.

That vid is hilarious, btw. The opening shot of Mick's Reebok'd feet daintily jogging in place...

There you go! I'd spend sometime on you tube. See what you like. Some albums were more commercial/pop. I am more the bluesy Stones guy, than the Pop stones guy.

That video and duet wasn't exactly the high point of Bowie's career either. Let's move on...

As to the Stones, Lord knows they have put out enough greatest hits / period overview collections that you can get your feet wet and see what you like and then get deeper into it. Hot Rocks is a great way to check out the "classic period ", for example. Their Satanic Majesties Request is absolutely not the place to start out with the Stones just like no one should start discovering Pink Floyd with The Final Cut. You'll just say "WTF" and walk away. Nix that if you're going to go right into buying albums and consider Exiles On Main Street and Some Girls instead. Those, along with Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Get Your Ya Ya's Out ( live album ), and Beggar's Banquet oughta get the job done.
They're a great band and ( God help me for saying this ) an important one. Dig in.

Yeah, and I was serious in my first post, too.

But this documentary is incredible, if you guys haven't seen it yet. Came out last year. I'm a little over halfway through it. Old footage and just the stones talking about their past, like a video autobio, all chronological. Extremely well done.

I definitely like the early Stones better, mainly the period when Brian Jones was still on board. I have the ABKCO collection of their London record singles and its fantastic. Interestingly the CD layer sounds much better than the SACD layer to me. Some Girls was great but not nearly as exciting. As for their recent "work", I think they have gone beyond self parody to just merely boring.

This is why I have no Stones, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bob Seger....in my collection. The problem then becomes, what other tracks are there?

Live: Get your Ya Ya's Out is great.

there is also a official download available of a live album: The Brussels Affair, from a 1973 show. It may be even better. With Mick Taylor. IMO, they were at their best as a live band in the period with Taylor as the Guitarist.

as far as best albums, I'd add Beggars Banquet to the list.

My personal faves that I still own are Sticky Fingers & Exile on Main Street. My favorite all time song of theirs is Gimme Shelter (I think it was off Let it bleed) .

Back in the early days, the Beatles & Stones songs were released on 45’s. The British album versions were different than the US releases. If you like the earlier stuff, there are 2 greatest hits albums to consider (I owned these on vinyl back in the day & wore ‘em out):

Big Hits (high tide & green grass)
Through the past darkly (big hits vol. 2)
