Phono cable requirements?
« on: 28 Jan 2013, 02:14 am »
Does a phono cable need any special LCR requirements? I'm referring to the cable between the turntable and phono stage, of course. I'm thinking low capacitance, for example. I use Cardas interconnects (300B Microtwin and Crosslink). These aren't low capacitance cables. Are there any issues using these?

If you're running a MM it's a good idea to keep the capacitance low.  Many modern MMs want to see a total shunt capacitance of < 300pF, and some < 200. That's preamp + cables + internal arm wire.  Blue Jeans makes low capacitance cable that's 12.5 pF/ft (I think).

With MCs capacitance doesn't matter as much.  I've seen low inductance arm cables for MCs, but it's uncommon.  Always a good idea to keep runs as short as possible.

Audience suggests that phono cables should be matched to the impedance of an MC cart. So they sell a one cable intended for low impedance MC carts, and another for high impedance MC carts. They also have a different cable that is best suited to the needs of an MM cart.

You can find the details in reviews of their phono cables and in their promotional literature.
