Graphics question on CAPS 3 build
« on: 24 Jan 2013, 09:49 pm »
Have assembled a Carbon version which is up and running sans black Wesena case (due here Monday) but cannot get screen resolution where I want it.  While using 52" TV, with my older Vista PC through HDMI I can get 1920 x 1080 screen resolution.   My CAPS 3 w/Windows 8 will only let me go to 1280 x 1024 thru HDMI to 52".  Has anyone else encountered this and solved it? My goal is 1920 x 1080 on the 52".

It sounds like Windows might be using a generic video driver instead of the specific Intel driver.  Intel does not list any specific drivers for Windows 8 for this particular motherboard, but most Windows 7 drivers should work.

If you go to Device Manager, is the Display Adapter driver a generic Microsoft driver or an Intel driver (Properties > Driver tab)?  The latest Intel Windows 7 32-bit driver for the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator listed is v8.14.8.1063 dated 8/3/2012.

I may not know enough to be doing this stuff - I downloaded the link and opened and installed it.  After hitting "Finish" the installer left the screen and there is no change, even after a couple of reboots.  What am I not doing?

Sorry, I mistakenly linked to the Chipset Driver which may have been already current (and if it wasn't, it should be now).  I have corrected my previous post with the correct link to the Intel Graphics Driver.

First though, I would check to see what the current graphics driver is.  Go to Control Panel > Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, right click on the display adapter and select Properties.  On the Driver tab you will see the current Driver Provider (should be Intel), the Driver Date (should be 8/3/2012) and the Driver Version (should be 8.14.8.1063).

If it already is, it won't hurt if you try to reinstall it (but likely won't change things), but if it's not, then there is a reasonable chance with the proper driver you will have the available resolutions up to what the attached monitor can support.

Unfortunately I have some bad news for you, I built a caps server with an Intel DN2800MT mobo totally unaware that the 'on board' GMA 3600 graphics chip has no compatible drivers for Windows 8. In fact it says that this motherboard IS compatible with Windows 8. When I discovered this I tried to use the Windows 7 drivers but they are totally unstable and despite getting full screen resolution, the Metro interface crashes and the desktop flickers. To date no one has been able to make the Windows 7 drivers work. This has turned out to be a scandal for Intel because a lot of Intel boards use the GMA 3600 graphics chip and a that means a lot of people have found Windows 8 will not work properly. Intel gave an official response on their forum which caused some outcry saying they have no plans to release a W8 driver for the GMA 3600. Naturally this has caused much anger and upset, after all they are still selling the DN2800MT as well as pc's and tablets using the GMA 3600 leaving anyone who bought one totally in the sh*t.

Personally I have decided that I can live with a smaller 4.3 resolution because I will only see it when I load music and do some updates. For me the biggest PITA is that if I forget to turn my screen on (a flatscreen TV) when I boot up the Graphics won't wake so all I get is a blank screen. So if you have this problem remember to switch your screen on first so the graphics chip can see there is a monitor is attached. To get around this I'm using a keyboard shutdown command, it's easy to set up and you can safely shut down the PC without a screen. You can also set up a re-start command as well.

There are a lot of threads about this problem on the Intel support forums, here's a link (below) to the main one. Sorry to bring you bad tidings but I'm in the same boat, I'm angry at Intel for not being upfront about this issue, if I'd known I would have bought a different motherboard, then again there are not many low powered silent and passively cooled options around.

I read somewhere that the Intel engineers have totally abandoned support for this board in favor of it's replacement.....thanks a lot Intel

P.S one way around this is to investigate a compatible graphics card for your PCI slot. Of course that would mean you won't be able to use a S.O.T.M soundcard but if you don't use one then no problem.

CAPS by default is a minimalist music server, intended to be silent and headless.  Win 8 and the Intel Dn2800MT board (same one I use in my CAPS V2+; thread here) were chosen for audio reasons, not video.  I use a simply VNC like Splashtop or Win 8 Pro's own Remote Desktop to do any maintenance (which is almost never).  Day to day browsing is via an iPad jremote app (for j River use).  If a true goal was 1080 video then the CAPS Carbon was the wrong solution.

Thanks for all the input - at least now I know to quit trying to get this screen resolution with this PC.  My current music PC is a quad core and does all the bells and whistles with aplomb.  I built the CAPS 3 to do a sound comparison to my current player so now I will concentrate on using the CAPS 3 as a minimalist unit and when I get it all tricked out I will see which PC I prefer. I have become addicted to using the WIKI and IMAGE features on JRiver while listening to music.  My knowledge of the personnel in the various groups and who wrote what song has doubled since I started playing around with it.

Persistence pays off.  Yesterday I downloaded a graphics update from the Intel site that gaives me the higher resolution video choices I was seeking.  Look under downloads for updates to the motherboard.  There were 40 updates and 1 was a graphics update for Win 7.  I downloaded and it worked like a charm.

Sweet.

Nice to see someone doing development.
