What program are you using to edit your tags?

I wiped everything out again and installed an older version of the server. And...

It works!

Which version?

Did you ever manage to disable all (any) plugins in the previous version?

I used 7.6.0.

I disabled all the plugins.

I use dbpoweramp, but also tried winamp. No luck with either one.

When I first started using dbPoweramp, I had some trouble getting the ripper to generate the tags in the format I wanted.  Not the most obvious syntax, but I did eventually get it to work and make the tags the way I wanted them to come out.

If I need to edit an ID tag, I just right-click on the song file, select properties, then "edit".  A window with the dbpoweramp header opens, and you just click on the field you want to edit, fill in whatever you want, and then save.  Seems to work fine for me.  Is this what you are doing?

Just for giggles, here is (I think) the most recent version of the settings I use in the cd ripper:

[IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],Various Artists[]\[album]\[track] [artist][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[album]\[track][] - [title]

Ah, maybe a dumb question, but did you rescan after changing the id tag(s)?  I'd bet LMS stores the tags in its database, so just editing the tag in the actual song file may not be reflected without a rescan.  Might only need to do "new and changed" scan, rather than entire rescan to pick it up, not sure.

Not positive this is how it works, just a semi-educated guess...

Yes, a new & changed scan is required for LMS to pick up the changes. As long as the file's modified time has changed.

I find it best to make sure all files within a given album are re-saved, even when making a change to just one file. You can also use a file utility to "bump" the modified times of a set of files before rescanning. This forces LMS to rescan all of them.

That's what I do and have always done. Since I bought my new computer, the changes are never saved. I click OK, go back and look at it, and nothing's changes.

I always clear and rescan my library when I make changes. Since I can't edit the id tags, I don't rescan the library.

Download MP3Tag and use it to edit your tags.
DbPoweramp has been consistently inconsistent when tagging newly ripped discs so I have just defaulted to ripping with dbP, checking the quality of the tags it's found and then editing the new files with MP3Tag as needed.
MP3Tag is pretty straight forward.  You do need to "Save" all your changes though.

In Mp3tag, if you make changes in the Tag Panel (the panel on the left, where you can easily make changes to multiple files) or in the Extended Tags dialog, then you need to explicitly Save. If you make changes in the file view columns on the right, then moving off of one item to another will save any changes made.

When I do this it says the file isn't open for writing. Why would that be?

This sounds suspiciously like the semi-infamous Windows 7 write-protection annoyance.  Check the properties of the parent folder for your music files to see if "read only" is checked.  If not, check the properties of every folder down the file tree to the song file you are trying to update.  I would not be entirely surprised to see that read-only property somewhere in the chain.

If you find it, google "write protected file (or folder) in Windows" to get suggestions on how to clear up the mess.  Some people have managed to get entire disk volumes in this state!

That's the problem. But I can't get it to change from read only. It just keeps going back to read only and not allowing me to make any changes.

Are you running with admin priviledges?  If not, do that first and try it again.  Otherwise, you get to join the herd who have experienced this issue.  I have not, personally, but there is lots of advice out on the net about things to try.  Google really IS your friend with this one.

Note that files/folders inherit this property from the parent folder -- so you need to start at the top of the file tree and work your way down.  Just trying to change it at the file level doesn't work if a folder further up is marked read-only.

Good luck!

It does if under Advanced > Change Permissions you uncheck "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent".

I googled it, but it seems like a total nightmare to track down the issue. I tried one of the fixes, but I got me nowhere.

Luckily, I thought of completely roundabout dumbass way around the problem. I copy the folder to my c: drive, make the changes--that save on the copied file, delete the original file in my external hard drive, and copy the altered folder in the c: drive back into my external drive. When I do this the changes stick. Is it stupid? Yes. Is it a waste of time? Yes. Do I care? No.

Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate it. Hopefully, this thread will help someone out down the road.
