Hey WireNut / Steve,

Welcome back to the dark side!

If it'll help, here's a thread re: my foray into plast-clay.. stuffed a SL-QD33 with 6 lbs with FANTASTIC results!   http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=56450.0

If your TT is anything like the SL-QD33,  there are sockets in the back for your power cord and ground cable.  Different than a 1200, which has captive cords.

My power cord looks like this (widely available, e.g., eBay):

The ground cord looks like / can be purchased here:  http://www.needledoctor.com/Technics-Ground-Wire

As for the feet...   can you post a pic?  I may have a few laying around.

Paul

Miney,

Thanks so much. I'll order the cable's asap. Can't wait to get it running again.

Steve,

Unfortunately my extra SL-QD33 feet are threaded... but now that I think about it, I'd supplanted them with sorbothane feet sourced from KAB: http://www.kabusa.com/accesss.htm#pg4a.  While these are available on eBay & elsewhare , the KAB ones have felt top cap to prevent them from sticking to / damaging furniture...  plus Kevin @ KAB is an awesome resource for all things Technics.

Now get to stuffing her!

Steve,

You need not be as uber-neat as Paul/miney is....the clay stuffed turntables all sound as good even if not as neatly done....miney is an arteest as you can see.

Just be sure you give clearance to anything that moves under the table.....and keep the clay off any transformer.  For a lot less than $30 and a couple hours of your time its the best single tweek devised for hollow bodied TT's.

Frankly, its mind blowing - enjoy!

I used the Sculpey Original Polymer Clay. I purchased the 8 pound block, as listed on  www.allartsupplies.com. I got mine on Amazon. The clay is very pliable and easy to work with. I was able to stuff about 6 pounds recently into my Technics SL-D2.

In terms of new feet. To save money, I cut two racquet balls in half to use as feet. The whole set up rests on a 3 inch maple block. Sounds fine to me!

Wirenut, did you get your preamp yet? If not I think this Thorens phono-pre is a really good buy. I have had one about a month and it punches way above it's weight. I got it to use on a second table. I hooked it up to my main rig and have been quite amazed at how good it sounds. For just over a $100 bucks with free shipping not bad. The first few hours it sounded a little thin, but after 5 hours it has filled out nicely. Did I mention it also does MC. As you can see I like this little Thorens unit a lot.

I am fairly experienced in vinyl, have heard more than a few phono sections, you will not do better than the Vista Audio for that budget.  For $300 you can definitely get one used, maybe even new.  I owned mine for several years, and I'm picky about SQ.

Research it here:

I also hear the Soundsmith is quite good.  I have two buddies that have owned both: one preferred the Vista, the other preferred SS.  FWIW.

KABOOM for the buck. For your purposes just dandy. Resale is excellent when you step up.

You guy's are awesome. I'll look into all your preamp suggestions. Can't wait to hear my 20,30 year old vinyl again.  :D
I have a lot of 80's stuff some are probably collectors items. EX, Lynyrd Skynyrd Street Survivors with the flames in the back ground.  :thumb:

Just wait until you start going to used vinyl shops and buy all the stuff you wish you bought back in the day, or music that would not have been interested in then, but now are open to.

Cheap vinyl will broaden you tastes.

Glad you're having fun.  Sounds much like myself and my boys that I dragged into vinyl with me.  They love it.  They do homework downstairs with Ummagumma playing in the back ground.  Helps stay focused ya know.  Don't have a Cobham album but my Floyd and Zeppelin albums sure surprised me.
Record stores are a blast, new vinyl is expensive but worth it for a favorite.  popmarket has some good limited packages, gohastings had a couple great sales before Cmas.  Have not done a discogs purchase yet...kinda looking forward to that one.

So what is the temp system??  Did you get your clay, preamp yet??

Watch out for the cartridge marry go round, much more fun than wires  :P

The only thing I had laying around is a 1970's Realistic receiver. It sounds awful but it works and so does the TT (like new) :thumb:
I haven't got the clay or a phono pre yet. I don't have room on my audio rack for the TT or preamp but I'll figure out something to get me by.
I'll set it on the concrete floor if I have to, at lease it wont vibrate.  :)

I have a copy too. It's no where near as good as Spectrum (obviously).

BC became too enthralled with funk for my taste.

Maybe the thing that makes this worth so much $$$ is who the bass player is?

Yeah, Randy Jackson was at one time a very talented fusion bass player. He played on a couple Jean Luc Ponty albums too.

In my opinion, he fell far, musically speaking. He would probably laugh at that thought from his convertible Viper (while driving it all the way to the bank), though.  8)
