woofer for a Line array
« on: 2 Jan 2013, 05:34 pm »
Hello,
my house is near this seller. he has this interesting low cheap 8" woofer with qts 1,0

http://www.electronic.it/product/20415/Woofer-200mm-60W-8-ohm-S-88.html

what do you think for a 2x8 woofer line-array dipole with 100-150Hz low-pass?   :icon_lol:
others TS parameters are good?
i have got active crossover and a 125watts 8 ohm AB power amplifier.
Thanks

Giuseppe

i have got a pair of alpha 15.
i could buy another pair of alpha 15; the bass system 2X2 alpha 15 in H-frame in 4 ohm could work better than a line-array system?
i'm looking for more powerfull bass with less panel vibration.

thanks

Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe,

2x15 Alpha per side would give you more output than those 8s, which have very poor xmax (linear excursion). For less panel vibration with a 100-150hz LP, you might consider the "W Frame", as described in this article http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=112471.0.

cheers,

Guiseppe,

Your idea was very good, but I agree with AJ that the excursion limit is to low. Building some close u-cabinets 8x8x6.5" would have given very good EQ and some 90 dB output for 8 units a side but challanging the x_max limit at 1 watt only.
However if you are in Europe, absolutely don't go for the Alpha15s, you will do so much better soundwise if you go for A&D Audio R 1524 from High-Tech Hifi:  http://www.traumboxen.de/ad-audio/
They will outperform the Alphas with a great margin. I know I have the both.

Many thanks,
the A&D Audio drivers are very interesting.
in ebay.de , i bought a pair of alpha 15. i use them in a cm 70 panel!
after 6 months, dawning the WAF.....   :(
so, the 6,5" http://www.traumboxen.de/ad-audio/v6515.htm could be a good choice for a 4X2 or 6X2 line array for 120Hz low-pass.
i could use my pair Alpha 15 in a W-frame for 20Hz, is it a good idea?
Cheers

I don't know really, I have no experience with the 6.5" units.

Alpha15 will not be able to produce 20 Hz in any OB regardless of type.
For 20 Hz you will need a unit with much lower fs, much higher X-max and much stronger motor to
deliver something relatively distortionfree at that frequency.

OK,
what is the A&D Audio driver 20Hz able?
Thanks

No it won't go lower than the Alpha but play much cleaner.  :D
In fact 20 Hz in OB is a real hard match to go.
You will have to equip yourself like what is done here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/142015-my-open-baffle-dipole-beyma-tpl-150-a-103.html#post2496546

Hi,
i have WAF about my 70 cm panel, but a 40 cm U frame could be good for me.
i'm not totally satisfated about alpha 15 in my room, so i could to change with a A&D Audio R 1524 .
but, what do you think about the Neodym-Magnet R 1525? Neodym magnet performance justifies the price?
Thanks
Giuseppe

I have A-B compared A&D R1524, AE IB15 and Alpha15 adjusted for their different sensitivity.
The difference between R1524 and AE IB 15 is in fact very small, so small as to judge IB15 a little cleaner is hard.
But compared to both those speakers the Alpa15 sounds much more coloured, unprecise and inferior and wouldn't be chosen in comparison.

If the neodym variant is worth about 40 Euros more than the regular R1524 is hard to tell. With it's a little lower bl value of around 10 I would judge
the regular R1524 a little better for OB use. In an U-frame I think the 1525 would be good also.
