I've been running an Ortofon MC-1 Turbo HOMC cartridge on my Thorens TD-280 Mk2 table with the TP28 arm for a while now. I've been happy with it, but as much because I don't have a ton to compare it to as anything else. I've just started my venture into tubes, and now have a Musical Paradise MP-301 Mk2 amp, a Parks Audio Budgie tube phono stage (with variable loading capabilities) and my DIY Frugel-Horn Mk3 speakers. As I'm now able to adjust loading, I'm considering trying a MM cartridge again (i.e. I understand the AT440Mla may sound better loaded somewhere other than 47k). Any advice or opinions on some good options that will mate well in my system? Budget is $200 or so (maybe $250ish) and I'm willing to buy used from a reputable seller to maximize my dollars and get into a better cartridge within that budget. I do not have a SUT, so a LOMC is probably not happening right now. I listen to classic rock, prog rock, progressive jazz, singer-songwriter stuff, etc. Pretty much anything but classical and country. I prefer a sound leaning towards dynamic and accurate, although the MC-1 Turbo has been reviewed as laid back and mellow, so I'm not sure how to compare that! In other words, I love the dynamic and accurate sound of Return to Forever, but also love listening to the vocals on an old Elton John album or Joni Mitchell on Court and Spark. I guess I need a versatile cartridge!
I appreciate any and all input.
