There's that mysterious term "laid back". What does this mean. Seems to imply a less dynamic sound .

I think it implies to being less upfront but still dynamic. In other words, the listener is feeling like they are a bit further back from the presentation getting all the music but, without having it thrown at them. My take anyway.

Hi folks,

When I use the term laid-back I am not referring to tonal balance - that's the easy part :thumb:

I am referring to 'sound stage presentation'.  The BP-26 tends to start the sound-stage at the plane of the speakers or slightly behind and too the sides of the room - some instruments will be projected into the room whereas with the BP-17 the sound stage starts at the plane of the speakers and most instruments will be presented behind the plane of the speakers and to the left and right rear of the speakers.

So if you like the music projected into the room you may prefer the BP-26 but if you like the sound stage to move out and away from you then the BP-17 may be preferred.

Hope this helps.

I was cringing at the thought of someone saying it was "less musical" than the BP 26  :duh: :D

Whew

I have heard this term applied to various power amps as well. I like the in our face up close presentation. Good there's something for everyone in this hobby but that's why the demo is important . :thumb:

It's got 12db gain. The bp26 has around 23db gain. The overall system gain will be around 12db gain lower than the bp26. Low gain pre amps are typically quieter for noise especially with tubes.  To each their own but If you like more casual listening volumes I find 12 db pretty close to to perfect. My passive has a 12db or6 db gain switch. In 6 db it turns my 650 watt 14b into about 100 watt little purrer equivalent.

Werd - if your preamp is passive how does it have a gain switch?

Ancient passive secret ...lol

I am guessing that the primary transformer winding can drive the gain switch.

Hi James,

If the BP17 is more laid back than the BP26, how would you compare / describe the sound of the bha-1 used as a preamp?

Cheers,
Bob

Yes

Hi James,

I'm leaning towards a BP-26 and understand that the Tape Loop can be used in a similar fashion to an HT Bypass.  Can you confirm this and if so how that would be configured as well as what implications there may be in setting up this way?

Thanks!

No the BP26 does not have a pass-through. Only the new BP17 preamp.

Can someone tell me if the phono card for the BP-17 is the same as the one for the BP-26?  Also, is this card user replaceable?
