Itunes 11

I tinkered with Itunes 11 on my office PC last night and have to say I was underwhelmed and disappointed.

It won't be making it to the big rig for a while.

I've been playing with it, main issue so far is that you can't resize the icons in the album view. I'm getting used to the different way of navigating, but it seems to take more work to get something done now. Maybe it will grow on me.

I didn't have a choice. It came with my new iMac last week (:bounce:).

I more or less made it look like what I'm used to: track listing sorted by artist. I do, however, like the improved interface of the Remote app which is what I use more than iTunes itself.

Good to hear about the improvement with the remote, but...

Regarding the icons re sized...  not only did they discontinue the ability to re-size the icons but we also lost the 3 different views of the same category (like artists, songs etc..). This is enormously helpful when trying to get the meta data to line up properly.

My first impression is that Apple is continuing to move TOWARDS THE CLOUD which accommodates their business strategy of content control and competing with other cloud competitors like MOG etc...

Little by little that direction is moving AWAY FROM THE AUDIOPHILE who is trying to managehas: big FLAC "in house" libraries,  high rez files, live show downloads, etc., etc...

If you manage your library through Smart Playlists, then you have the option of choosing List, Grid or Artist List views from the View icon at the upper right.

Hmmm... Let me play with that. I think you may have solved my biggest problem with 11.

BTW Here's a quick little tutorial on Smart Playlist I found enlightening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RpfrESlOFw

I thought I was replying to the topic I started in the Discless Circle, iTunes 11 - Completely Redesigned, but I now realize this is a new topic in the Apple Core.

I created the topic in the Discless Circle because I figured iTunes is used on more PCs than Macs, and in fact the OP of this topic was referring to having installed it on a PC.  I don't know if a moderator wants to merge these two topics in whichever circle is determined to be more appropriate?

Select the "song" list to get the 3 panes of genre/artist/album. You might have to enable the column browser from the view options, I don't remember if that is enabled by default.

  I don't get it.  I can't seem to get it to sort the way I liked it before.  Basically I sorted by artist and album, showing the album cover on the left side but then showing a straight list on the right of the songs and any columns I wanted to add like date added, file type, etc.  I can't figure out how to do that with this one?
And it's also slow as B*LLS!

Unfortunately you will not be able to view album art with a detailed column view, as you previously could.  The best that I've found so far is to create a Smart Playlist (Media Kind - is - Music), and use the View icon at the upper right to go back and forth between List View and Artist List View.

in the Artist List View select the artist from the middle column then change to List View to see metadata columns for all albums of that artist.  If you want to see the details of a particular album highlight the first song of the album before switching to List View and it will take you to that album's position in the list.

It's not ideal, but I'm able to navigate and edit pretty quickly.  It's not a lot different than using the Songs view, but being able to first see the album art (or lack of it) is helpful.  As far as it being any slower that the previous version, it seems to be no different on my system.

You can add those extra columns in the song view, but I don't think there is a way to display the album art in that view.   I haven't really noticed a speed difference.

Thanks for this thread folks. I am not an immediate upgrader, so it is cool to see what I will be getting into when I make the change. Keep adding your observations.

I've resisted because I'm afraid of potential compatibility issues with Pure Music. Any Pure Music users here who have done  the " upgrade" - particularly on a Mac? Any issues?

It works fine with the exception of gapless playback.

I downloaded PM 1.88 on my mac mini and discovered that it had difficulty starting to play the first song after opening. Then, I saw that the channel D site offered a 1.89d version to fix this problem. So, I upgraded and no issues since then.

For anyone interested, I have been using Audirvana Plus 1.3.9 with Itunes 11 and it seems to work fine.

I always worked in album view so I'm not really having any problems with the new version in fact I like how it displays the play list and cover art when it's playing.

Audirvana 1.4 is out now, and (as far as I can tell), works well with iTunes 11.

I just updated.  I hate updating iTunes because I've had problems every single time.  I've got more issues this time than any other time.

I'm running Windows XP and can't get service pack 3 to completely download, so that may be part of my issues...

I lose 3/4 of my album art every time I upgrade.  Not that big of an issue, as I just click get album artwork, but still pisses me off.

I have to re-synch to my ATV 1 just about every time, as stuff gets messed up - track listings, songs appearing several times, etc.  Really pisses me off.

Specific to this time -

Random stuff is on "the cloud."  I don't want my stuff anywhere but my external hdd.  I didn't (knowingly) give them permission to upload anything.  I even clicked on the icon saying I didn't want anything shared with Apple.  Ie I played the Doors's LA Woman; 3 tracks were repeated - 1 of each was on my hdd, and 1 of each of the 3 was on the cloud.  There's several albums like that.  It's easy to tell which ones, as there's a small cloud logo in the upper left corner, but it still pisses me off.

I can't change the order that albums appear under artists.  I hate how albums appear alphabetically; I want them chronologically.  Metallica's ...And Justice For All shouldn't come before Kill 'Em All.  Maybe I'm the only idiot who gets hung up on chronological order of albums.  I could change this in the previous version.

My biggest gripe right now though - libraries aren't seperated.  I hate my wife's music, and she hates mine.  I don't want to see Carrie Underwood and Akon in my library.  She doesn't want to have toward through Slayer and Black Sabbath in hers.   Maybe there's a way to seperated them again, but I'm too pissed to open iTunes right now and fiddle with it some more.

Speaking of seperate libraries - Now I have to uncheck all her songs, otherwise they'll synch to my ATV1's internal hdd.  There's limited space on there as it is.  If I uncheck her music, she can't play it.

I didn't want to update iTunes because I knew some of this crap would happen, as it happens everytime.  This is by far the most crap I've had to deal with though.  Only reason I updated is because we bought an iPad.  I tried installing it, and it had problems.  It extracted the old iOS, and couldn't install the new version.  So I reluctantly updated iTunes to try to complete the iPad update.  Guess what?  It still won't install.  After I got really pissed, I did a system restore to bring back the old iTunes.  Guess what happened?  It wouldn't open and said I needed to reinstall iTunes because parts were missing.

My computer's a piece of shit though.  My mother in law bought it for my wife a few years ago for Christmas. At the time we only had a laptop, and her shoulders and back were giving her problems because of it.  I planned on buying a Lenovo/IBM, but just like her daughter, she didn't want to listen to me and bought a piece of shit Dell.  Since we've had it, it's been a disaster.  It can't fully download service pack 3 because it asks for a disk.  Problem is the disk it asks for didn't come with it; it came with a different version of XP with office.  So the piece of shit has never worked right.  The damn thing was obsolete before we got it.

It didn't bother me too much before, because I just thought to myself 'I told you so.' Now that my 9 year old laptop is on its last leg and I'm unemployed so I can't go out and buy a new computer that's worth having, it's effecting me.  I told her mother she should buy a Lenovo tower, as we already had a monitor, keyboard, etc.  it was actually a few bucks cheaper.  I showed her which one and wher to buy it (Lenovo's website).  But she thought a new monitor and keyboard would be better.  Wouldn't you know it, the old stuff is better.  Nothing on the Dell works right - wireless card, printers, etc.  And yeah, I tried installing service pack 3 from a disk and different version of it from Microsoft's website.  It's still messed up.  There's no point in buying and installing Windows 7 (or is it 8?) because a new computer is only a few dollars more.  If I udate the Dell to Windows 7, I just know it'll be even more fucked up.

Once I get a job, I'm going to buy a new computer and treat the Dell like the fax machine in Office Space.

I'd like to say rant over, but let's be serious.  Sorry, I needed to get all this off my chest.

W now return to our regularly scheduled rants...
