Modern Progressive Rock

(first off my keyboard is sticking like crazy, so if it looks like a type like a tard, you know why)

I have followed all the previous prog metal/rock threads but only end up liking a handfull of the choices.

I recently came across a few decent bands in a vein I like, so I thought I'd share.   I generally don't latch onto a genre per-se but when I like a style its nice to find a few good ones.

Rishloo (now defunct, quite good, from Seattle)    Album (actually have all three, the last is most original)
Dead Letter Circus  Album (this is the warning)
Karnivool   (my least favorite on the list, but still decent)   Album (Sound Awake)
Dead Soul Tribe   Album (January Tree)

Hey Josh - how's the cold northland treating you?

I came across these lately and likes them a lot:

OSI - Fire Make Thunder
Kotebel - Fragments of Light (kind of classical meets prog)
Lalle Larsson - Weaveworld (chops music for sure)
It Bites - Maps of the Past (probably a buit too pop-oriented for you though)
Blind Ego - Mirror
Agents of Mercy - The Fading Ghosts of Twilight

Enjoy,
Bob

Here's a few 2012 releases off the top of my head.

Soen - Cognitive
Kind of like a cross between Tool and Dead Soul Tribe. Maybe a bit more chops oriented than these.

Kotebel is a GREAT choice! Their newest, Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble, is incredible.

Echolyn - Their newest S/T release is a strong one. Loaded with great melodies, emotion and musicianship.

Storm Corrosion - Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree and Michael Akerfldt from Opeth team up for a really moody release. The feeling is almost ambient at times, but there is more going on. YMMV

Flying Colors - Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs), Steve Morse (no relation, from Spocks Beard), Casey McPherson (lead vocals) and Dave LaRue (bass) team up. Melodic rock with plenty of progressive moments.

District 97 - The Trouble With Machines. Top quality progressive with a touch of metal. American Idol 2007 finalist, Leslie Hunt on vocals.

Panzerballett - Tank Goodness. Metal-fusion with ridiculous musicianship and complexity and a sense of humor.

Forgas Band Phenomena - Acte V. Straddles the line beautifully between fusion and prog.

Other bands with great releases in 2012 are;

IZZ, Thinking Plague (avant-garde prog), Anglagard, Beardfish, Diablo Swing Orchestra (metal, meets swing, meets opera).

There's a good thread with the best of 2012 - http://www.progressiveears.org/forum/showthread.php/52-Best-Albums-Of-2012-So-Far

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Bob, well Toronto is a nice enough city, but it isn't NYC.  A lot cheaper to live right in the smack of things though and not as crowded, so that is nice.  Lifestyle here is pretty good.

Depends on what you mean by "progressive." But there is a lot of great progressive music (both rock and jazz) available from the artists on the Moonjune label. All their releases are generally very high quality. My favorties from them are Moraine, Iron Kim Style and simakDialog, but most of the others are certaily worth checking out. You can sample most of their catalog from their website. I have posted about a 60 track sampler they are offering as a full resolution FLAC download (and other formats too) elsewhere in the Music circle.

District 97 is definitely a cool band!

District 97 is a bit much on the keyboards...otherwise I like it.    I am not a big fan of keyboards in my prog.  Would love DT, and a whole lot of other bands more if they'd drop the keyboards.

Haven't heard Baroness....although I heard the name.

Really like Dead Letter Circus right now (probably not the most progressive per-se but honestly pretty decent).  I'll take that over trying to be "progressive".

So, I've been listening through some of these.  Some good stuff.

I didn't mention before, but I am big fan of SOEN.  Found that one earlier this year.

Rishloo's new upcoming project can be sampled here.  It sounds good to me.

I haven't warmed up to Storm Corrosion yet.  I got it when it came out as I am a big PT and Opeth fan.  Its just a bit too atmospheric to be digestible.

I know you already know about Katatonia, but their latest (Dead End Kings) is well worth checking out if you haven't heard it yet.

I grew up with MH's drummer. We're good friends.

He and the bass player from Mars Hollow have started a new band that is even better. It is called Heliopolis. Along with Gerry Beller on drums and Kerry on bass, Matt Brown is on keys and Michael Matier on guitars.

Not a bit of this band on Youtube.  Where can I hear samples?

Modify:  Nevermind.  I caught the typo in your later post.  Checking out on Youtube now.

How have they changed since "last fair deal..." and "viva..."?  I've lost track of them since those albums.

My favorite of theirs is the Great Cold Distance,  Night is the new Day is interesting.    The new one hasn't gotten much listen yet.
