Question for people living outside the U.S.

Doesn't everyone say that "this is how the Japanese started when they really got their engine going and look at where they are now and that China is undergoing the same process?"  I don't know, the Japanese have an awfully large marketshare and don't necessarily copy other people any more.  People used to say the exact same things about them 50 years ago.

I think we are mixing in too many issues here.

Illegal copying, i.e. making duplicates sold under the same name without patent grants and/or permission from the trade mark owner, is illegal, no matter who does it.

China has an outstanding record in doing precisely that, as did Japan in its day. And this will probably remain that way until they start investing in research and development and start getting ripped off themselves. They don't copy just the basic product, but used to copy the brand name as well. I understand they don't do this much any more due to pressure on their government and expanding trade with the world, which China needs badly.

As for illegal copying of patents, that's harder to prove, but it's done regularly, wherever technology will permit it. That's something I think few will condone, because that's outright theft.

But it's also a fact that quite a few product from well known sources are in fact manufactured in the Far East because of lower wages. Some legally, from legal factories, some illegally.

It's also true that some Far Eastern products have been picked up by Western companies, rebadged and are sold with a mighty price hike, way out of any reasonable proportion. This is possible because the actual manufacturing price is low enough to enable profit rates of 200-500%. Is this is a rip-off? Morally perhaps, economically no. You don't HAVE to buy it, so if you do, that's your choice.

Cheers,
DVV

Dear Usher

1.   Were is the engineering in using the same supplier,  K. Müller ?
2.   Your former series was on the outside at Sonus Faber copy. The drivers Scan-Speak copies. The fact that you down to the smallest detail try to copy the drivers (even the model number 4585) shows that it is a total rip off. You even copied the basket, witch for the 4585 was/is hopeless to mount. The mounting recess is too small, the mounting holes is only for Ø3 screws etc. etc. And you tweeter try’s to look like a 9700.

 ...

Where is Scan Speak's engineering in copying a JBL design?  The  reason there was no legal action between Scan Speak and Usher is due to two reasons.
1.  There is a demonstratable difference in the motor structures and performance.
2. The Woofer in question is not an original SS design.  JBL's patent on this particular design ran out years ago.

In fact, Usher researched the drivers thoroughly before manufacturing them to see exactly whose design they really were.  Why Usher decided to manufacure the drivers themselves is actually a pretty funny story in itself....Based on the rudeness of a Scan Speak representative......but that's another story!

And, by the way, Sonus Faber is not the only contributing brand to the Usher speaker design......Usher has used ideas from several companies whose designs they like.....in an effort to bring the best to one product.

1.   Why do you post everything twice ?
2.   I’m not talking about motor design ore JBL patens. I’m talking about the fact that Usher is selling something that visually looks like something it isn’t.
3.   The same goes for the terminals. If Ushers is better, why try to make them look like something that you claim if of lower quality ?

What about the numbers ?
Why do you make a driver that looks like Scan-Speak, at number it very closely to there’s ?

The only reason I can cum up with, is that you want to make people believe that they buy the real stuff.

It is true hat they did that in the beginning. But they (the Japs) also put up a program, of government directed researched.
The government told certain manufactures what to develop/ to researched in. That’s why we today have a surface treatment that is called “Toyota diffusion process”
This resulted in a highly educated work force, any a climate in the companies, that leaned them, that researched is the way ahead.

I have no info that the Chines have a program like that. They only thing I know is that they would be pretty lost with out western/ Japanese engineers.  :D

1. To make sure you can read.
2. I agree, it isn't a scan speak.....its better.
3. The terminals do not look the same
By the way, Usher did use WBT terminals....but users kept snapping them off....so now they build their own....better terminals. :nono:
