TT bearing assembly diagram?
« on: 8 Nov 2012, 01:40 pm »
Sorry for the ignorance, but can someone upload a nice diagram of a TT bearing assembly (I know there are different styles) with the various parts labeled?  I think I get most of the design, but (sorry) I don 't know what a 'thrust plate' is. A simple diagram would be great help. Thanks in advance.

Don't know of a diagram but the Thrust Plate in the flat plate at the bottom of the bearing that the spindle point spins on.  TT bearings are usually very simple: Housing, thrust plate, spindle.  Sometimes the spindle's point is some new fangled space age material.  Sometimes instead of a thrust plate you find a single ball bearing in the center of the hole.  Sometimes the bearing is inverted but the components are usually similar.

Here's a guy that built a DIY TT. Probably doesn't sound very good, but his solution for the bearing is quite ingenious. Check out the photos of his bearing about 1/3 of the way down the page. It will give you an idea of a basic bearing.

Brilliant!  Using an engine valve as a spindle.  Genius!  Also genius is using your computer to control the speed of the stepper motor.  That guy has some wits.
