Checking for interest- transformers
« on: 24 Oct 2012, 05:36 am »
Not sure if this post belongs here, but since the folks here have been so helpful to me, I thought I would post here first. Plus, these would be useful for a DIY build.

I have three transformers that should go to a good home. Two are from a Cary amp, one from a Cary pre-amp. They are twenty five years old, but have about two years worth of play.

Just pay shipping and they're yours.

In another post you say
I am disassembling my Cary Sweet 807 amp and SLP70 pre.

I'm just wondering why - ?

Berndt was in first. I'll ask him if he wants all three and get back to the posters.

Just checking in.
Been ordering bits to start the chassis for this.
Going to use the original cary schematic, just not run it ul.
Transformers all tested good.

Not surprised the transformers tested good. They had little play. The amp was stored for most of its life.

Alarm bells went off when you said you were going to use the Cary schematic. I don't know the extent you will follow Cary's schematic, but those transformers are from a Cary Sweet 807. I disassembled it because I could not, in good conscience, sell it as an amp. They are known to eat tubes and, I have heard, are prone to thermal runaway. My experience with them amp confirms that they eat tubes. Rather quickly, too. In my case, not more than 50 hours of play before things started to go wrong. I used top quality tubes, too. Good NOS stuff and some new manufacture, too. Nothing helped the amp's proclivity to burn out tubes. Audio can be an expensive hobby, but....
