JRiver for Mac
« on: 24 Oct 2012, 02:39 am »
Has anyone tried the JRiver for OSX yet (I believe it's still beta)?  Just curious as to how it compares to the usual suspects such as Audirvana, Amarra & Pure Music.

I'm on the road but will likely give it a try later this week.

I was just about to post that I could find no mention of an OSX version, beta or not.  I know sometime ago they did start a poll in their form asking if there was interest in a version for OSX, but apparently no decision or announcement has been made yet.

Hard to say. It hasn't been released for Mac yet.

The ALPHA pre-release is out now...still $25 through February.  $5 more each month until it is $50.  A little rough on things (it is alpha, after all), but sound quality is quite nice.  Things will only get better from here on out.  Check out JRiver's forum (look for the Mac sub forum) for much more info...

Hmmm... I was under the impression that JRiver supported convolution, crossovers, and stuff like that. I don't see any of that. So.. it's done with plugins? Which are ... 3rd party? And not likely to be ported to the Mac? Not being negative, I've never used JRiver on Windows, I'm just hoping for a platform that will enable FIR-style convolution on the Mac.

Did you look in DSP? JRMC has native convolution thus you can plug in info from Audiolense, etc.

I looked in "DSP Studio" and could find nothing about convolution...

Is there any issue with going back and forth between Pure Music and JRiver? Can you close one and open the other and play music, or is some configuration required each time?

Yes you can, but I think most companies recommend restarting your computer before launching a different player.

Their crossovers and convolution are not 3rd party. I use convolution for stereo listening and have crossovers and EQ setup for movies in their Parametric Equalizer. Eventually I'll have convolution setup for multi-channel, too. I have a zone created for movies and another zone for music. JRiver's ZoneSwitch automatically plays my media in the correct zone.

I don't have a Mac and don't even know anyone that uses one. JRiver has mentioned on their forum that not all features are available immediately, but will be added.

I've always thought a Mac Mini would make a really cool little music/video streamer, especially since the JRemote app for iPad should work so well with the Mac player. Another item for my wish list ;-)

I installed the latest version on my macbook a few days ago, and started using it.

It supports DSD (haven't tried it yet though), can play from memory, has a nice UI, and has the "webgizmo", which lets my iphone act as a remote through a web interface.  Basically everything I was looking for.

Only downside is that it crashes quite a bit, especially when I change settings.  When I am listening to music, it has yet to crash.
And it is still in developement, so I expect it to improve, and only $30 for the rest of March.

In JRMC 18 for PC, Convolution is an option under DSP Studio.  Crossover filters are an option under DSP Studio/Parametric Equalizer.  I don't know if this is true for the Mac version, but you can check.
