PLIIX or Neo:6 with DTS-HD & DD-TrueHD
« on: 8 Oct 2012, 08:59 pm »
I'm running a 7.1 channel home theater system, but I notice that few titles, including DTS-HD & DD TrueHD Blu Rays, run past 5.1.

For that reason I've been using DTS-HD or DD TrueHD + Prologic IIX to artificially add the back two rear surround channels.

Does anyone have experience / opinions on whether for DTS-HD or DD TrueHD 5.1 sources whether it's best to:

A) Just run it natively as 5.1
B) Run it + Prologic IIX
C) Run it + Neo:6
D) Something else?

I like getting the use of all 7 channels, but wonder w/ 5.1 sources whether adding PLIIX or Neo:6 is better - or perhaps it's better not to
"artificially" add these at all.  Thanks!

Check out >>THIS<< site.
There are filters you can set that tell you what movies are available in what type of format.
Last I checked, there is an impressive list of 7.1 movies.

I run PLIIx Cinema for all my 5.1 movies, and the results are great.  If my Denon sees 7.1 it does not apply it.

I was going to recommend that site as well........Impressive piece of work & very handy being able to apply the filters.  340 titles in 7.1 channel sound.  Not a bad start, though pretty thin still compared to the overall releases.

PLIIX w/ 5.1 has also been my default.  It does tend to blast too much the rear surrounds for the rear row audience, but it's probably assuming the sweet spot is the first row about 15 feet away (per audyssey).  Will have to work out some kind of pre-sets or something when there are or aren't people seated in the rear row.

In case folks are still following this, I found the following thread on AVS forum, and in particular the explanations of Roger Dressler, one of the PLIIX creators, particularly helpful:

Now I'm just wondering how / if Audyssey room correction is applied or dealt with under the DTS-HD / DD-TrueHD 5.1 + PLIIX scenario.
