Holli82's VR-9 MK II system
« on: 7 Oct 2012, 10:28 pm »
OK
I can take a hint guys (Jack & Gavin).  I know I am slow but I am computer challenged and posting with photos is a long drawn out affair for me.

I built my house in 2003 and at the time my system consisted of Martin Logan Sequels, a Forte preamp and amplifier, and an Adcon CD player.  I designed the room around those components.  My room is 14 X 21 with 12 foot ceiling.  My back wall is built at an angle so it is not a square room.

I upgraded to a Red Rose system:  Classic speakers, model 3 preamp, model 5 amplifier and added a REL sub.  I also purchased and Primaire CD player.  I added a stage in the front of the room to bring the tweeters to ear level.  I then had my walls treated with fabric and  sound absorbing material.  (don't know what is was but it works).

In 2006, I went to CES and heard a pair of VR-7's powered by VAC and spent the next year and half scheming of ways to get my next speaker.

In the interim, I bought a Kaleidescape system along with Theta GEN VIII and that combo is my current front end.  I also bought a VAC integrated amplifier.  I waited 8 months for it but it was worth the wait.  All that was missing was my VR-7s.

I got a chance to meet Albert at his "old" factory in San Marcos CA and he had a pair of finished VR-9's that he was breaking in prior to shipment.  I liked the idea of active subwoofer so I changed course and decided on the VR-9's.  Prior to purchase, Albert came to Vegas on business and was gracious enough to come to my home asses my room prior to purchase and felt his speakers would work just fine.  (a true understatement)

I got my speakers at the end of 2006 and right out of the crates they were better than anything I had heard in my room.  After break-in things got even better.  I was in bliss and felt that no more changes were needed.

And then along came Jack and his threads on upgrading his VR-9's and how much better things were after the upgrade.  I haven't met Jack but I feel like I know him and trusted his assessments about the upgrade.  So I called Albert. He  told me what was involved and because I lived close he would be willing to come to my home to do the upgrade.

Albert and Damon came up in April and completed the upgrade ( for details see Jack's thread).  After spending 6 months with my MK II upgrade, I would encourage anyone with VR-9's to upgrade immediately.  The improvement in sound is not subtle.  I can't believe how much better things sound.  The amazing thing is that this is improvement is independent of recording or type of music.

The REL subwoofer is still part of my system but only in use for movies.  It is off for 2 channel listening.

All interconnects and cables are Analysis Plus.

Enjoy!

I know, I know....there shouldn't be anything in front of the sweet spot but the sound doesn't change with or without the chairs so they stay

Jack, maybe you can teach me how to rotate a picture

Kaleidescaape drivers for CD and Blue-ray.  A server sits under the cabinet out of sight

Theta D/A converter

VAC integrated amp 110W per channel

all the time.

I can't tell a difference when they are out.  I'll make sure to take them out when you come over.

Very nice.  Classy.  Clean.  No issues with the bare screen between those beasts and reflected sounds?

Finally! Lookin' good Rodney!

I put pics in through links to photobucket. I haven't tried uploading to the AC gallery. (Trying to save the site some memory)

I can vouch for Rodney's system, it sounds incredible.  The room is almost completely anechoic, so the image focus and clarity are outstanding since there are no reflections from the side walls.  For some reason, the screen in between the speakers does not seem to interfere with the phantom center image.  The chairs shown in the photo are not directly in line with the speakers, as the seating position is above the chairs.  At a recent CES, Rodney allowed us to bring over a few potential clients and they all were amazed at the level of realism that this system can produce.

Rodney,

Very nice setup! I own a pair of the VR-5 Anniversary speakers. This Friday, I'm shipping them back to VSA for the MKII upgrade. Just spoke with Albert today to get everything set and ready to go. Yes, VSA is a great company to work with.  :thumb: I do have a suggestion for you, upgrade your speaker cables to the VSA Masterbuilt biwires. Your VR-9 MKII's will thank you!

Yes, do try the MasterBuilt speaker cables and interconnects.  However, if you give the Masterbuilt power cords a try, I think you'll be surprised that your system has been elevated to another level.  If you do try them, even though they'll sound great without any break-in, give them three or four weeks.  With the speakers and amps already at the stratospheric performance level you're enjoying, the power cords (along with the speaker cables and interconnects of course) will really be able to show their stuff.

Hi Rodney-
Really nice system!  Don't worry about my thread - its all 1 big learning experience.  If you're coming to RMAF, you've got a standing invite to come over.

My 7's started out being driven by 1 VAC 300.1 amp, then 2.  Now 2 450 Statements.  The 7's love the extra power - can't help but wonder whether your 9's might also benefit.  Have you considered increasing the VAC power?  I realize your subs are self-powered, but can't help thinking 1 or 2 300.1s might be something pretty special in your room.  A 450S would also be incredible.  VAC's preamps are also pretty special - I had the 2.0 Master Controller from the same generation as your integrated.  I realize more power = a more complicated system w/more Ics', preamp, etc.  Just a thought...   :D

Hey Guys

Sorry for the slow response.  Been tied up at work this week.

Thanks for all of the comments.

A couple of things to mention:

1)  My previous theater screen had some impact on the sound but my current screen has been neutral as Albert mentioned.  The material that the screen is different and the edges of the screen are treated with a fabric ( feel like felt) that makes the screen a non issue.

2)  Harve, would love to have your amp and preamp setup but Albert thinks I should upgrade my power cords and speaker wires so that will be my next change.  As Henry and Bob mentioned, it is probably wise thing to do.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make RMAF this year.  For those that are going, have a great time.

I recently replaced a pr. of MIT Term 1 XLRs on my CD/SACD/DAC with a pr. of the Master Built Signatures and must admit it made noticeable difference.  It widened the soundstage both vertically and horizontally and I found myself having to turn down my subs.  I'm an electrical engineer and as skeptical as they come but I am here to tell ya this cable-makes-a-difference thing is true...in spades!

I wanna go to Vegas!

Too bad I'm not watching Pacquiao vs Marquez 4 this December and will miss CES in January...AGAIN!  Maybe if the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight happens, I'll finally be able to visit you Rodney!
