Tube rolling the Lyr
« on: 31 Aug 2012, 02:11 pm »
I just picked up a Schiit Lyr with about 40 tubes for a really good price.  I had owned an
Aasgard before and returned it because it just doesn't float my boat.  The Lyr, however,
with the right tubes is a keeper.  I've only tried about 4 different brands so far, but the
Lorenz ECC88 from the late '60's and the 'rocket' logo russian 6n1p have the balance of
good bass and smooth highs I'm looking for.

Still not quite as holographic as my ASL Mk. II amp, but bit more transparent and of course,
quite a bit more power.  One final note...I love what tubes do for these amps, but the best
amp I own is still my near mint, Pioneer SX-1250.   Something about what 25+ watts into
any can under 50 ohms that really wakes them up and tightens up the bass....at reasonable
listening levels.

My SX980 was wonderful as a headphone amp.   :thumb: Only the O2 has bested it, for me. Unfortunately, while it looked great, internally it was not mint and needed too much repair work.

I own the Schiit Valhalla.  According to Schiit,  tube rolling on the Valhalla is a no-no.   :nono:  I did not know rolling on the Lyr was possible.  Anybody looking for a tube headphone amp the Schiit should be high on anybodys list.

I have a Lyr as well and several sets of tubes and its been a really good amp to me..until I discovered the O2.

The sad thing is with the advent of the Lyr is the NOS tube prices have gone thru the roof....and many people are
spending mega-bucks for NOS tubes to get them into audio nirvana.

What will these people to when there arent any NOS tubes??

I personally dont hear the 'astronomical' sonic improvements of the high dollar holy grail NOS tubes seem to bring
many folks....

That said there is always that soft spot in me that just likes to look at those orange glowing hot orbs!!!

LOL..

All the best
Alex

From Schiit Website:
Are Valhallas “rollable?”
Earlier Valhallas (August 2010-April 2012) are not designed for tube rolling.
All Valhallas shipped since May 2012 are rollable to accommodate E88CC, 6DJ8, 6922, 6N23P,
etc on the input stage (that is, the shorter tubes.)

Nope, can't roll with my Valhalla.  But the manufactured model I have sounds amazing with the Beyer DT990 600 Ohm.  Just fantastic!

I'm really enjoying the Lorenz tubes.  Not 'dirt' cheap, but
got a mint pair from the tube monger for $38, which in the
arena of nos tubes is very reasonable.

Hi...

I purchased a gently used Schiit Lyr with stock GE 6B27 tubes, along with AKG-701 headphones.   Sounded great, but had a pair of JJ E88CC tubes, and tried them.  Bass was too boomy for me.  I decided to buy a pair of 6N1P's from Schiit.   WOW!  Right out of the box, everything seemed more detailed.  Thought...if 6N1P's sounded that good, then 6N1P-EV's might sound even better.  Took a month, but received four matched rocket logo's from Russia.

Results...disappointing.  Detail reduced.  Soundstage flat.  Bummer.  I decided to put the 6N1P's from Schiit back in, when I realized they were actually 6N1P-VI's.  Had I noticed this before, I probably would not have purchased the EV's.

My question is this.  Do 6N1P-EV's take a while to break in?  Again, the 6N1P-VI's sounded great right out of the box.  Or, did I get inferior tubes.  New to tubes and tube rolling, as you probably can tell.

Thanks, Mike
