LISTEN FOR THIS
« on: 30 Aug 2012, 10:58 am »
Hi Folks,

Thought this might be a fun topic.

Nuances or sounds you hear now in your system that were maybe masked before or you never noticed before.

I was listening to the Beatles LOVE album (first cut BECAUSE) from a download off the DVD at 96/24 on my BDA/BDP setup and in between the vocals you can hear a FLY in the studio that the mic picks up.
Give it a listen – it is about 1 minute in.

Ironically - distortion sounds much clearer and you notice the detail in it.

An explanation ensues...

I have a few CDs where the band has integrated distortion into their music. On my last system - it really sounded awful, a big soggy mess. The same CDs played with the 28s and the JBLs are really amazing as the distortion is much crisper and very detailed - you can hear so much more in it.

Be well...

Thank you, Laundrew. Exactly my experience as well, particularly from high resolution speakers (Axiom M80 now - Model T, later?) and headphones. The upside to this downside, for me, is that high resolution gives me confidence that I'm listening to what was recorded, not something introduced into the sound (distortion, colouration) by my equipment.

Indeed a funny event, the artists might have overlooked/overheard at the time. But what;s with the bubbly sound just before the minute marker?

Cheers?

I've heard chair squeaks on several Elvis Presley remastered songs, especially on alternate takes.

On Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones, I can hear the click of the distortion pedal for Keith's guitar at the beginning of some of the choruses.

And that's why I own Bryston.

I made an audition disc on which I thought I knew every note, sound, ect.  I have been using this disc for years.  Earlier this summer I picked up a pair of speakers and when auditioning them I noticed something I either never heard or payed attention to before.  The track is Willin' on the Little Feat Waiting for Columbus album and before the band starts playing someone yells "down in front"  Later, when I played the track with different speakers on the same system it was much more difficult to discern but since I was focusing on it I did hear it.  What was very interesting to me was that the first time I listened to the speakers--not critically-- my initial impression was that they very detailed and clean.  I guess I was right!

Wonderful video Prelude - thanks for sharing this!  Goes up there with The Greek Audiophile video on You Tube.  One thing though, it does underscore the affluent market that MBL caters too - unapproachable components due to price, for many of us - myself included.  What is great is that I think I'm pretty close with the Bryston gear.  I want the title of that CD.....LOL!

Hey prelude, you sound a bit like my wife.  If you have watched any epic films or artistic films you have listened to this stuff.  I myself am a lover of music and a dabbler in all it's forms at least all it's artistic forms.  Happy listening!

On the second cd by Maria Mena, just before and during a solo, you can hear Maria chatting with the technician. Someone forgot to close a channel there.
I'll look it up if anyone is interested.

On Springsteens "the wild the innocent and the E street shuffle" you can hear a chair or music sheets shuffling in the 1st minute or so during the piano intro on " New York City Seranade ". I always found this interesting, because Bruce became a perfectionist a little later in life.

The virtually subliminal lyrics of the "Paul is Dead" hoax the Beatles perpetrated on us in the late 60's are now much more discernable, especially on the remasters e.g. I buried Paul at the end of Strawberry Fields etc.

Neil Young's "Tell Me Why" from "After the Goldrush" is a song where it's easy to get diverted by the catchy tune and completely miss Young's brilliant accoustic guitar work.  Now its multi layered complexity is in your face such that you wander how is he doing that with 10 fingers and 2 hands and 6 strings.

The beginning of "Taxman" one can hear coughing from memory.  It is amazing though that the higher the resolution gets that one can hear more things and things more clearly that were never noticed before

Hi!

"Let me please introduce myself; I'm a man of ... " well, neither wealth or fame. :(

Which version of (I can't get no) Satisfaction is that?

Thanks!

The Who live at the Royal Albert Hall dvd, Paul Weller arrives on stage wearing the most hideous jumper you've ever seen, when the applause dies down you can hear a London Lass in the audience from the rear speakers say 'ugh, 'is jumpers bloody 'oribble!'
