I priced The Wlre set, too.  Damned expensive but I might still buy it.  Andre Braugher had a mini-series, too, that lasted one season.  I think it was called Thief.  That's another one I'd like to have.

I picked up all of The Wires seasons used on Amazon awhile back. It's one of those shows that you can get lost in even though you know it all by heart. My second favorite deceased show is Deadwood, which should have run longer. Third is The Shield, which thankfully completed the story arc.

How I wish I could get WKRP In Cincinnati (my favorite comedy) and St Elsewhere of DVD.....

Started watching Supernatural - it's so ridiculous but I enjoy it anyway. It's Buffy for 'Bros'. I put on a baseball cap when I watch it and in my head finish every sentence between the brothers with 'bro'. I love how they have a different gorgeous 20-something girl involved every episode. I also like when everyone tries to act. Just gives me the giggles.

The debut of "Newsroom"  was excellent - pretty ballsy / clever move to use real events still fresh in our minds, and where the audience is likely to know more about how the story will progress than the protagonists.

Hopefully it can maintain this level.

Speaking of the universe my vote for best show, hands down, is "The Big Band Theory."
A brillant show with over the top writing.

How can you not love Amy Farrah Fowler?

The Killing.
By far, the best show of the last two seasons. Writing, acting, direction, production are all top notch. Emotionally, it hits below the belt like no show I can remember. It had better sweep the awards shows.

Game of Thrones.
Fantasy done right. What else can I say?

Grimm.
A modern day Buffy. Why did it take so long to repeat the formula, correctly?

Justified.
Down and dirty with flawed characters, clever writing, and great acting. Just when will the powers that be recognize that Timothy Oliphant is the next "Man With No Name"?

The Walking Dead.
Shows us just how 'civilized' we can be under the right circumstances.

Agreed! The debut episode impressed me. Hopefully they can keep it up from there.

Some other favorites:

Game of Thrones
Walking Dead
Boardwalk Empire

The one that i'm totally hooked on to is Breaking Bad. Its an astonishingly great series, probably the best i've seen till date. I just finished watching 4 seasons in little over 2 weeks, and was surprised at how consistently good it has been. The acting is top notch, and very real.
I used to like Fringe, and True blood but after a first few seasons, they have gotten very stale. The last two seasons of true blood have been a disaster, and Fringe too has completely fizzled this season.
The only other series that i look forward to is Good wife. It too is very well written, and acted.

I've been hearing great things about Mad Men and Game of Thrones, and will start on that series soon.  I've read GRRM's book, and it'll be interesting to see how it has been translated onscreen.

You mean Big Bang Theory, correct?  I've had several people recommend this show.  I've recorded some episodes but haven't watched any.   We've had the first season of The Game of Thrones, and we haven't been able to get five shows into it (and both the wife and I have read the books).  Having two young children does that to you.

The HBO series shows and, presumably, their cable counterparts have brought audiences some fabulous writing and production while the networks have given us these so-called reality shows all over the place.  I'm ready for the Real Housewives of West Virginia :bounce:.  Don't know about you.

Don't you mean West "By God" Vagina?

Before you get all pissed off my brother-in-law is a WV native, and a descendant of the Hatfields or McCoys.  Don't remember which one.  HE came up with that slogan!   :nono:

1) Damages
2) American Horror Story
3) Justified

i have to agree with others before, the best writing can be found in series rather than movies today.

indeed, even mainstream commercial network TV can have some gems buried in the dross - when the bean counters give producers / writers enough time to develop the arc of a story line and character development over a couple of "seasons" (which can now be as short as 10 episodes), and the balls to tackle more complex material or at least treat the audience like adults

life doesn't neatly package itself into stand alone 45 minute episodes, and while we can all cheat with some mindless "junk food"  I find a none stop diet of entertainment pandering to that mindset to be ultimately unsatisfying
