Hi James -

I hope you are doing well.  I just wanted to let you know I took delivery of the 4B tonight and let's just say that I am THOROUGHLY impressed. Its sound right out of the box blew me away.....staging far exceeded my expectations and bass was the best that has come out of my speakers....very quick and punchy.

I would like to thank you and your teams at Bryston for putting together such a great all-around product.

I can see myself happily being a Bryston customer for life.

Sean

Exactly my experience, at minimal volume testing all the connections i was struck by the improvement, even better than expected.
Wind them up and it's like i'd found a new set of ears.

My experience with my 4B-SST2 has been good. i have to say finesse, upper frequency clarity and purity is what i want most from my system. And the Bryston exceeded my requirements.
I replaced a Forte'4a and the Bryston is definitely better sounding than the Forte 4a was.
I had that Forte' 4a for about 17 years and it was a hard amp to beat. But the Bryston 4B-SST2 did so easily.

Joe, it is indeed. Thank you for the warm welcome over here.  I'd love to see more activity in the great Bryston forum.

Have you given more thought to adding Bryston to your system?

Yes I have. I am seriously trying to get 28's by the end of the year. I have to experience them for myself. I heard the 4BSST2 with a new/different pair of speakers at a dealer and did not really realize that I was listening to the Bryston. I was more focused on the speakers when I was listening at the time and liked what I heard. Although thinking back to that session it was the amp I liked and not the speakers. Certainly not the Bryston I remember from decades ago. Smooth, powerful, incredible detail and very musical. Absolutely wonderful. I am glad you like yours!

Joe, that is awesome to hear.  I will very much be looking forward to your thoughts, especially how you like their flavor relative to your other front end gear.

I somewhat regret to admit that I lept for the 4B not after auditioning but rather after tons of research.  I can say I am truly happy now, though.  I think you will be too.

Seeing as you are located in NY, this will be of little consolation to you - if you are ever in the southern part of the Lone Star State, you would be more than welcome to come by for a listen.   :thumb:

Sean,
You are very kind and hope to make my way out there sometime. Thank you! Of course the same applies to you. James Tanner is an extremely valuable asset to this forum, community and his company, Bryston. Other manufacturers should take notice. There is no replacement in research and you indeed made a fine choice. I've bought many a gear by research alone and could still live with many of my choices. It's fun to play around but a man has to settle down sometime.   Ha!

The only issue I have with running two big 28B-SST2 amps vs my 4B-SST2 amp is the idle wattage use.
Two 28's use 430 watts vs one 4 using 170 watts idle.
The base cost per year running 24.7 idle is $170 a year for the 4, vs the pair of 28's base idle cost of $430 per year.. Let alone the added air conditioning needed in the Summer to dissipate the heat from the 28's vs the one 4.
What we suffer to have beautiful music...

And yeah i would like to own 28's also...

I guess everyone of us in this forum would love to have a pair!!

There are practical considerations when it come to purchasing amplifiers. Example if the system is in the small room, with limited space, and driving a relatively easy to drive speakers or monitors - monos like the 7B or 28B is a little overkill I think.

In such setup a stereo amplifier is the best approach...4BSST2 is the ONE.  :D

The best post so far, and one I completely agree with. In my little UK room my 4BSST2 is driving a pair of PMC OB1i's and even after several hours of high level listening, with massive amounts of bass and slam, the 4B is not even warm to the touch...

Cheers

Great points all around!  Practicality should be a major contributor to one's decision-making when it comes to choosing between options, IMO.  I know James has said this more than once...and for good reason.  Bryston's amps, I've read, don't differ so much in flavor, but rather in getting more as you move up the food chain.  Certainly 28's would add a lot to all systems, but that's not to say that the 4B cannot get you where you need to be.

A little update, last night I popped in my copy of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City....first, let me say that that disc is fantastic - highly recommended.  Back to the 4B, I noticed improved staging and richness since first implementing the 4B into my system.  Not to be cliche, but I am more and more impressed each time I listen to it.  Both the guitars and vocals seemed to float in my room rather than sound like it was being projected from speakers.  It was only when the crowd applauded that I could place the speakers' locations.  It was really neat.

I hope more positive changes ensue as the amp along with my other new peripherals break in further.  More to come....

Ha! Practicality never entered my mind, that's what I'm doing wrong.
I am happy to read the 4Bsst2 is breaking in nicely and glad you are enjoying the amp.
