Hi Mario

We have separate 1 TB USB test drives of all the major type files, FLAC AIFF WAVE APPLELOSSLESS etc., and the only one that can be slow in loading is the APPLELOSSLESS (M4A). it does load but takes about 3 times as long as Wave or Flac.

So I have to think something is amiss with those files. Maybe send us the drive and we could have a look?

Hello James,

As noted else where, I too have issues with M4A.
I'll get back with more info later and as mentioned I can supply a sample file.

My M4A files don't produce music no matter how long I wait
I'm quite disappointed as the files do play on my PC using Windows Media Player & Foobar 2000 and the BDP-1 manual states that M4A is a supported format.

Hi Terry

Well I really do not know what to say. I have no issues with M4A on my systems at home or in the factory so maybe the best option would be to remove M4A from the support list till we see what is possible?

I have always told our customers to use Wave or Flac or AIFF as the best format for the BDP.

I just loaded the Beatles Green Apple 14 albums on a thumbdrive and converted them to M4A on my MAC laptop and they play fine.  Strange

I'll double-check, but I believe my files are 96k 16 bit files - don't ask!
I'm pretty sure that when they "play" on the BDP-1 they display in MAX as 44.1k- you get a progress bar but no music.

I'll double check at home tonight

Yes maybe it is the 96 thing

I will wait the next update and see. I understand the update will be release in the next few days. I am able to play these files (AIF and m4a) with my Squeezebox Touch and my Cambridge NP30, so I don't think they are corrupted. It's a lot of work to transcode these files in Flac.

BDP1 definitely able to play m4a, in this case a direct iTunes copy of Lossless cd-rips ( I mean I just copied the m4a-files iTunes made onto the hdd, works perfectly for all lossless rips). No 96 though:

I've got home now and I've tried a few things.
I'm confused now
I have two M4A albums, 16 bit 96k & 24 bit 96k
Both play on my PC fine.
Neither produce music from my BDP. I get a progress bar so it's actually trying to play something, yes?
I see the access light on the thumb drive flashing away so the BDP is accessing the file ok.
My DAC isn't locking onto the output from the BDP.
It's not the DAC as that plays everything else and I tried another totally different DAC without success also.
MPAD reports the correct sampling rate (as does MAX) but reports the bit rate as 0 kbytes per sec!!!
I tried down-sampling one of the files to 44k1 but that gave the same results to.

I realise M4A works for others but that doesn't help me.

Anything else I can try to provide further diagnostics?

Before anybody asks, according to "Properties" in Windows for the M4A files, they're reported as "Apple Lossless, ALAC"

Like Terry, it's impossible for me to play ALAC in 24BIT/96kHz with my BDP1. I downloaded the latest Brady Winterstein Trio at this following URL: http://www.qobuz.com/album/happy-together-brady-winterstein/3149028004021. I replace the ALAC version for a Flac version and everything plays fine now.

Yes it looks like Linux is not happy with ALAC above 44.1.

Thanks James. Seems it's reproducable after all.
What happens next?
Can it be fixed or do have to live with it?

Not sure - I will have to ask Chris to do some testing - if we can make it work we will of course but I think recommending Flac, Wave or AIFF is the best short term solution.

Hi Terry,

Can you send me a sample of each file?
