A pair of 7Bs or one 14B?
« on: 10 Apr 2012, 01:18 pm »
My appologies if this has previously been covered elsewhere. What would the differences be other than $$$ between doing a pair of 7B-SST2 or one 14B-SST2? Speakers most probably will be B&W 802Ds. Thanks for your input.

I did comparison between 7B SST and 14B SST driving PMC IB2S, 7B was noticeably better, my educated guess was that 7B outperformed 14B mostly due to its larger PSU.
For what it is worth I consider 7B SST among the best performing and reasonably priced monoblocks on the market, they are much more capable of driving difficult loads than their lower powered siblings.

The 7B's will be easier to move.  I have 7Bs and a 6B which is about the same size and weight as a 14B and it's a back breaker. :>)

I agree with all the above and as a 7B SST2 user driving a pair of PMC MB2i's I couldn't be happier with their performance.

Obviously the big advantage of the 7B's over a 14B is that you can put one next to each speaker hence keeping the speaker cable as short as possible which in theory all helps overall performance.

I assume that, all things being equal, the 7Bs would present a more forward dynamic presentation than the 14B !

Mono blocks give you better separation, which means better soundstage...go with a pair of 7b's.

They are both mono blocks. The only difference is the 14b is one piece.

Another vote for amps close to speakers here, when you upgrade to the 800s you can then just get a pair of crossovers and two more 7Bs!

That's good news, i couldn't do a representative side by side comparison so this thread got me wondering if i should have gone for 7 rather than 14B last year, the whiole power supply difference wasn't publicised much then.
Thanks!

I'm going for the 28s! But yeah, I would choose the 7Bs.

No disrespect but aren't mono blocks supposed to be on separate chassis?

Redbook, Bryston confuses the issue by saying the 14b is basically two 7b's under one hood.  However, only one power supply? Thusly, not true monoblocks.
