Ceiling Cloud importance

Wondering if(besides)first reflections on ceiling, how important is it to treat above your seating position.
I had put two 242's on first ceiling reflections and am impressed as how the stage seems to open up and how the
highs are alot more clearer.
I have 2X 244's(spares)that if treating above seating area is worthwhile then I'd use them there(or I'll have to sell them).
Perhaps 242's are better above,if it's worth doing the above area.
The ceiling is a dropped ceiling 7'2"high,so she is a bit low.
The room is dual purpose theater and two channel.

I have magnepan fronts.  I found that a ceiling cloud diffusor (gikaccoustics gridfuser) above my listening position did help a little.  However diffusion behind my speakers and on the wall behind my listening position was much much more significant.

Keep in mind that magnepan speakers are planars with a figure 8 dispersion pattern and not much floor and ceiling interactions.

However, I also have a drop ceiling.  Stuffing fluffy acoustical insulation between the joists above the ceiling tiles significantly (and measurably with REW) cleaned up the bass response of the room.

Hi dm,I had put roxull safe and sound(8-10"thick) in the floor joist cavities(ceiling).
I had the gridfusors and tried them in different patterns(all horizontal, vertical and then each one opposite of each other(checker board)if you will.
Then the other day I took them down and tried the 242's@the ceiling first reflection(way better)probably because my 7'2"ceiling height.Seems some people prefer absorbtion on a low ceiling(I do now).
My main speakers are the Revel 50a's floor standing ect(front firing drivers).
My back wall I have two monster bass traps as it is only half the width of the room as it opens up to a hallway.
I ordered 3 Realtraps diffusers to go in front of the backwall utilizing the monster traps.
Have read that diffusion in back of maggies can be a very good thing.
Hopefully I can use the 244's above my seating.

Found my answer, talked to James at Realtraps.
As I have the 242's midway between ceiling and seating, the cloud above the seating is the same only for use in a mixing/control room as the main speakers are closer.
So I believe I'm covered,I'll see if I can use the 244's somewhere else, except for the diffusion coming for the backwall I believe were all trapped out.

We went a little large with our ceiling cloud.  :)   It's both a huge hanging bass trap  (acoustic inert hangers, etc) and a set of custom diffusers.  It does amazing things to help deepen the soundstage and reduce clutter in the sound.  Clouds are good!

One of the three equal size pieces, during construction.  We used a drywall lifter to hang each piece in place (created template and put up acoustic hangers first), then attached with bolts to one another...ingenious setup by my local carpenter/friend and great design by Jeff Hedback.   :thumb:

Exactly. Above your head is as good a place as any for overall ambience reduction, but it's not a reflection point so there's no specific benefit to that location.

Thx.

Ethan and James at Realtraps are great resources.  Their videos are acoustic 101 training guides.  As you can see from my pics, I am a real Realtraps fan.  :)  25 of them at last count (inclduing diffusors on back wall and RFZ's at side 1st reflection points).

Ted_b,do you have a pict of the backwall,THX.
I to am thrilled with what treating the room can do for music even in my 12X19x7.2 room .
I have a mess of Gik panels which were more affordable for me,now I stepped up a bit and am doing  Ethan's
diffusorsX3 on my partial backwall.
Nice to see those videos as even a small New York Manhatten apartment can sound real good.
All depends on funds and how important the music is to a person.

The two pieces of art are GIK ArtPanels, on either side of 2 Realtrap Diffusors..

I put some Auralex foam on my ceiling at the reflection points and found it made no difference at all!

My ears are about 12' away from the speakers with an 8' ceiling so it may be there aren't any first reflections.

I use 2 large ASC bass traps above my seating position and this helps
with mid-range transparency and bass is better controlled (definition is
superb).

Putting something above your head will help with problems of floor to ceiling modes. Just like putting panels on the back wall, may it be tuned or broad band.

Ted you have the best room I've ever seen. You actually have the space to integrate a theater and stereo in one properly. And it looks damn comfy on there!

My goal is a room like that in three years.
