Last year a few people were recommending methods on how to take photos. One of them was to take shots outside. Here is one of my favorite stock photos of a NS-40 sitting out on the back patio.

Crop everything except the equipment and it would be a nice pic, just my opinion.

That is a stock photo and I will work on it eventually. It was done for experimentation. I can't believe what a difference going outside made. It was an overcast day which I think helped some.

The diffuse lighting does look much better!

To remove the background distractions, perhaps try a sheet of cloth that extends beyond the boundaries of the photo, I like a material with a very coarse weave.

Using a smaller aperture helps too.

Get one of those reflective shields that goes on your car's dashboard.  Keeping it out of the photo, set it up so that it reflects light on the BACK of the amp.  It'll add a little definition and make the amp "pop" from the background.  You'll also see more detail in the transformers.

It's disturbing to make something and not be able to capture how good it looks.

The wood wrap shown is their standard quality. The one in your photo is a very high grade. The difference shows up as a more defined pattern density. (More stuff going on and clearer.)

This is a good time to bring up the selection of wood at my disposal. There is a direct link to the site on another post, however it does not mention the differences between, say Heirloom and Artistic selections. Artistic wood typically does not have a pure pattern. In another words, it may have streaks, different colors etc.. Heirloom branded wood will have a more pure look to it. The color will be more balanced and there will be fewer artifacts.

There is a third feature of wood, which is being mentioned here. This has to do with pattern intensity and uniformity. The photo shows a light pattern while David's shows a heavier one. I like them both. If someone wants a specific pattern or grade, let me know. There may be a minor upcharge since they'll have to search through the wood more carefully.

I've chosen the Artistic Butternut on the upcoming preamp.   I don't usually go for crazy looking grain, but with wood sides only on the Beacon II, it might look cool.   


It would be something else to see an amp in the dark blue color that djbnh made popular, and wrap it in some of Delnero's Reclaimed wood that has wild colors enfused.

Here's an option:

Get a 4x8 sheet of white matte Formica.  Secure one end to 4x4 plywood sitting on saw horses, and lift the other end up in a slow curve behind the amp.  Do all that in open shade, and Voila!  Instant budget studio, and no distracting details in the Formica that need to be photoshopped out.  I'd suggest slightly overexposing the image to keep the bright background from UNDER-exposing the amps.

Nathan, you OK with this idea?
