6B-SST2 vs. 4B-SST2
« on: 2 Feb 2012, 08:56 pm »
I was just comparing the specifications in the manuals that are found on the Bryston site for the 6B and the 4B.  This raised a couple questions:

1) The NOISE ratio quoted for the 6B (@ 29db / 23db gain) are slightly better than the 4B as follows:
    6B: 112db @ 29dB gain & 115 @ 23 dB gain, whereas;
    4B: 110db @ 29db gain & 113 @ 23 db gain.
How does the 6B actually outperform the 4B, when I would think their designs are identical and if anything, given space contraints, the 6B should be the amp that would face compromises? :scratch:

2) The 6B consumes 2100 watts for 300 wpc into 8 ohms (which is 17.5 Amps) - though the max. consumption for 4 ohms is not quoted it would be over 3500 watts and this would need over 30 Amps.  How would this ever be achievable, given that it appears it's designed for a standard 15A outlet? :scratch:

I have a 6B SST and 7B SSTs (bridged 4B) and the chassis design is very different.  The 6B has three independent shielded modules that "plug" into the main chassis.  (It also is a back breaker to move. :>)  Whether this increased channel isolation improves the "numbers", I have no idea.

My 6BSST too - heavy but has handles.  It also uses a 20 amp IEC even though a 15 amp design

Don't get that Phil...how does it use a 20amp IEC if it's a 15 amp design - did you mod-it or are you just using a heavier power plug and a 20 amp wall outlet and circuit?

I'd expect it to be at least a 3rd heavier than the 4B, which already breaks my back at 60lbs.  The 6B should be in the 90lb range - though I haven't checked the specs.

If it's on a 15 amp circuit, you probably could never get it to clip consistently while running 4ohm speakers because the panel breaker would trip....

No did not mod it.  My old 14BSST was the same - 20 Amp IEC

My 6BSST sits behind a couch and I use it to drive the center and rears:
