Audio Meters?
« on: 2 Feb 2012, 01:14 am »
Although I prefer having as few components as possible in my audio system, for some reason, I have a nostalgic weakness for analogue audio meters. Not only do I immensely enjoy their aesthetics but I like to keep an eye on how my amplifiers are preforming in relation to my current listening mood. What say you?

Mmm... matching Bryston analogue meters sitting atop each one of the Beasties

Be well...

I would love to see those "blue" meters too, but as long as they do not INTERFERE with sound. Can it be done?
But again... I am for the simplicity. Fewer parts fewer chances to get them broken. as long as those "fewer" parts are top quality I am for it!!! :thumb:

no way, simpler is better.  The power on / clipping LEDs are more than sufficient.  When I had my home theatre setup.  I went as far as to put electrical tape over those LEDs (amps were in the front under my screen) so the viewers would only concentrate on the content on the screen and not the five green LEDs.  I'm the same way when listening to music.  I even go as far as to close the black curtains so I would not see the white screen (even with lights off) when listening to music.

I think meters look awesome. Wish I had some. Screw Waf. If I ever get married, she's not allowed to interfere with my hobbies the same way I wouldn't try to take over hers  :green:.

Will always prefer the glow of tubes over some giant blue dial.  :o

I agree, my system you can't see unless you look over at it, but I kinda like the look to reflect what's under the hood a bit.

The blue meters look nice but they provide no useful information.  The needle hops around showing lots of movement because most amps are really doing most of their work at low wattage.  The below picture is of a meter from the famous brand 200 watt amplifier.  Notice the scale.  It is at ~75% max at only 20 watts.  I lived with the blue meters for several years and I can tell you -- I have no use for them.

I recently downloaded the JL Audio sound analyzer toolkit app to my iPhone 4S and really enjoy watching the SPL meter and the audio analyzer graph that shows how well my speakers are performing across the frequency range.  When I get bored with that it has an amplifier power calculator and an Ohm's law calculator.  I envision becoming the hit of a future cocktail party providing instant Ohms law calculations to those who ask.

I have a Beringer DEQ2496 in one line of my digital stuff I do like, at times, to see the graph of the frequency response on it's front panel.
Some early music has no response over 15KhZ.
Also watching a soloist bopping around. Best of all is a Vibraphone.. Cool to watch the huge one note or chord hits.. peaking..

No meters. They distract from the music, imo.

I'm afraid I'm not a fan of the analogue meters.

My 4B-ST keeps me happy with it's green LEDs.  I've never seen them yellow or red.

My amp sits low in a cabinet and I'm usually not looking at it when I'm listening.  In fact, I'm using sipping on some bourbon and typically have my eyes closed.  I find it cuts down the distractions and lets me focus on the music.

Meters are "nice" in the sense that a new dress for the wife is nice. Doesn't change anything "under the hood" but it's got it's charms.

The Bryston clipping LEDs are very form-follows-function; they tell you everything you need to know and nothing that you don't. I'm OK with that.

Always have to keep them in view though, i've had red lights on the bass sides of the 14BSST2s and it
didn't sound distorted. It was good, clear and loud!

I see meters as a major distraction. I even turn off the cd display...would rather listen than watch. :no_see:

If I wanted Audio Meters I would buy McIntosh os something alike.

Bryston is best the way it is! No changes here please!

Those aren't meters.  This is a meter. Also very appropriate for certain tube and monster amps although I would prefer blue.

If Bryston ever puts these meters on their amps that would be the end of my interest in their otherwise stellar products.

Ditto that . Of what real purpose would they be other than razzle -dazzle sales gimmicks? I have always disliked that about  MacIntosh amps. :shake:

indeed, it's something to keep an eye on how my amplifiers are preforming in relation to my current listening mood. This is for Musicality, Beauty and Grace.
