Soundcheck Mods Crashing
« on: 31 Jan 2012, 02:53 pm »
Hi Guys,

I've had some problems with my Touch "crashing".

The Touch is hooked up by Ethernet either to my laptop (set up as a wireless bridge) or to the Ethernet out on my extra SB2.  It happens in both configurations.

It seems to happen sometimes (but not always) when the router device (laptop or SB2) is powered off and on.  I suspect it's an issue with the IP address being reassigned.

The problem is that the Logitech Server then can't see the Touch at all.  The only way I seem to be able to get it back is to restore factory setting and then spend over an hour reinstalling Soundcheck v.3.

Is there some way I can avoid this?  Either by leaving the Touch screen active, so that I can access the Touch or by changing the settings?

Go into your router settings and assign the IP address to the Touch as a permanent IP address.  Then it won't reassign a new a IP address each time it's powered down.

Mine is in the DHCP Reservations List (D-Link) under Network settings; I've assigned each item (Touch, Oppo, etc.) a permanent IP address due to firmware updates, etc.

Another stupid question.  My router is wireless.  So the wireless signal is picked up by either the SB2 or the laptop.  They then connect to the Touch by ethernet.

Do I go into the router setting (which I need to figure out how to do) and assign a permanent address to the SB2/laptop or do I assign a permanent address to the Touch?  Or both?

Thanks!

Both!  I have a permanent address on my D-Link wireless bridge and the Touch.  Mine is connected as yours is, excepting I use a bridge.

To setup a static IP address on a device, see here:

As for getting into your router's setup, check your manual or manufacturer's website for a pdf version of the same.

Here's a generic link:

Just remember to write down or print off a list of the settings as they are, and any changes you make initially, it can be very frustrating to not know where the problem is when you first start playing with these settings.

I'd be willing to bet that it's not an IP address problem.

My guess would be a problem with the switch on your router possibly losing track of the MAC address of the Touch when the bridging device (laptop or SB2) is turned off. I've used the SB2 as a bridge before and it worked well, with no problems passing DHCP requests and responses. Another possibility is that the Touch is connecting to mysqueezebox.com instead of your local server when it first starts up. In theory you should be able to 'pull' the Touch from mysb.com to the local server, but I'm not sure it always works.

The next time it happens, reboot the router (not the laptop or SB2), wait a minute or two and see if the server then sees the Touch. I think I'd also try restarting Squeezebox Server if rebooting the router doesn't help.

I thought I saw someone else say that they had applied all of the Soundcheck changes except for disabling the screen. If you can figure out how to do that, it would probably be a good idea until you get this sorted. You can then go in to Settings > Advanced > Diagnostics > Ethernet Info and view the IP address that the Touch has been assigned. If it's a 169.254.x.x address, then it didn't successfully receive an IP address from the router.

Thanks for all the tips guys.  Here what I've tried - which might help other computer newbies.

My first problem was that I could not figure out how to "get into" my router. Most websites seem to leave this part out, I guess because it's so simple and most techies know.  For those who don't, you just open your web browser and key in the IP address of your router.

When I did this, my Linksys had a section where you could assign an IP.  It showed the IP addresses already used for the open devices, so I could just click on a section to permanently assign it.  Wireless laptop and bridged Touch, done!

So we'll see if this holds.  My first configuration was running the laptop wirelessly and running the Touch on the SB2.  That paused frequently on regular res. and had a really hard time with 24/96.  Using the laptop bridge is way better and it runs 24/96 effortlessly, no pauses.  24/192 is another matter, that doesn't run at all.

So far, so good with this set up.  Many thanks again all.
