LOOK WHAT I GOT!
« on: 29 Jan 2012, 06:56 pm »
Hi Guys, Look at what was delivered and set up for me to show off yesterday. :green:
Yup, Danny came up with this awsome pair of tweaked Super-V's. We set them up and then we enjoyed them for a bit before Danny had to go. I believe we have just enough power on them for now. Custom 700 watt monoblocks seem to do the job well! I noticed a couple times we were around 100db and didn't even realize it! Very cool, they are for sale and if anyone wants to come by and have a listen , your absolutely welcome. Awsome weekend for sure!  :thumb:

Those look really good there. I think the Richie Bumblebees finally found a home.  Well, I'm jealous, because I know what that room sounds like, and it is a killer. I was talking to Rich yesterday, and hear your moving up to the MS-1 server.  Neat things happening at the Dodd household!

By the way,  how did you decide to put your diffusers behind and outside your speakers? I haven't seen that in the standard recommendations.

Wow Gary.  Those amps are completely insane!  More of a cold climate amp I suspect.  I still love my OB7s biamped with two pairs of your 120s. I'm listening to them right now.

What was interesting to me was Gary's measured room responses.

I highly recommend picking up a decent SPL meter and some type of frequency generator. We used some minute long sine waves at 20Hz, 40Hz, 60Hz and 100Hz. A few more steps would have been nice but we got the idea. So we took a measurement and wrote down the level.

Anyway, Gary had about an 8 or 10db peak at about 60Hz from the left speaker. It really wasn't from the speaker but a peak in his room on that side. The right side was pretty smooth.

Always remember to do one speaker at a time.

Anyway after about 30 minutes of measuring and adjusting the gain, crossover points, and (on the left side speaker) some adjustments on the EQ, we managed to get a smooth response from both speakers. The EQ built into the A370PEQ amp is great. We found the range of the peak, adjusted the width of the range to attenuate and turned that range down until it was flat.

The bass response now sounds really balanced and super clean.

Before all of that though we move the speakers around until the imaging and sound stage was locked in.

Anyone in the Dallas area needs to drop by and hear this system before Gary's customer picks up the amps.

Gary,

Spill the beans on those amps and more amp porn please!

Hi Gary:

Do your neighbors mind the 100dbs? It looks like an above floor living room. I may be moving in town and wonder how it would fair with the neighbors as I listen loud.

What amps and price?

What gear do you sell?

Nice room, yum.

Anand there is lot's more coming. I have been busy lately and have not had the time to get it all on my website. When I have it all done I will post a link to it for all to enjoy. I have tons of pics as I built them.
As for the neighbors, I didn't hear any complaints, but then again we don't go that loud for too long, hoping it doesn't bother anyone.
I custom built these amps for another company, but I have his permission to show them off and talk about them. I would imagine they will retail in the $50K range. They raise the room temp about 10-12 degrees in a 12 hour period. I am runnig them 12 hours on and 12 hours off to break them in. Power usage is quite high at 12 amps continuous for the pair.
Thanks guys for all the compliments on the gear and the room.
All the white diffusers are a product called Mr.T's from PI Audo Group.

Nice!  Those speakers do look good in your room.  I meant to ask earlier from the other thread, what were the previous speakers you had in place?  I was just guessing that they were some V-series variant of some kind, but maybe not?

Seeing as we are on the subject of amplification, two questions:

I know that the pro-audio coax in the super-v is rated to handle a lot of power, but theoretically is there a limit short of that due to the specifications of the parts in the crossovers?  Just wondering how much would theoretically be "too much" where one would start worrying about frying parts?  I also think it would probably be pretty cool to take that rig outside with some measuring equipment and active hearing protection and see how much of 700 tube watts the v's can take.  :icon_twisted:

Second, regarding the other half of the super-v.  Danny, if I remember right you've said in the past that the servo drivers in OB will hit their excursion limits before their amps run out of power (A370 amp in this case).  My question is in running these drivers in this configuration, about how much power will get you to (or just short of) that excursion limit?  Put another way, could you get away with the A300 amp, for example (or something even lower power than that?) and still get everything out of the drivers they have to give when running OB?

I live in the Dallas area and my interest in the Super-V's has got me excited.  I've been intending to try to get up to Wichita Falls to audition them.  Now, the Dallas area would be much more convenient.  What do I need to do to arrange it?

The P-Audio woofer is rated about 500watts rms input power.

With the woofer sensitivity of around 99dB, that would give continuous power output at 126dBSPL!

The tweeter sensitivity is rated at 109dB with a 100watt rms limit.  Puts that at 129dB SPL!

A symphony orchestra at full output is about 120dBSPL!

Wear your favorite hearing protection!   :o

Total output depends on the frequency range. They will obviously run out of exertion faster at 20Hz then at 40Hz. I have never hit a limit with them. 100 to 110db peaks are not a problem. I just can't listen that loud.

When we hit 100db levels on Gary's room the level was really bouncing around 90db and a peak shot up to the 100db level. It was not continuous. No way could I listen to anything continuous at that level.

The A370 amp is just right for this speaker.

Nice!!!!!
Those add some nice color to the Dodd Cave.

How are you attaching the diffusion material to the flat screen?   I don't see a stand.  Is it a foldover?  I have a nasty suckout in the same spot.

Thanks, Danny. :)  Just waxing theoretical on that question. . . I barely listen much over 90db peaks most days anyway. . .

From a purely academic standpoint, just throwing the questions out there, as to whether or not in this application the A300 could run out of gas or, on the other end, the H500 or H600 could get the drivers in trouble if the volume knob somehow ended up on "11" .

Seeing as it seems a rare bird with the super-v for someone to run them with monstrous amounts of power, I just got to thinking about the far, far ends of the limits of the design.  :thumb:
