Old Sansui woofers reborn as OB bass augmentors

I scavenged these 17 inch woofers from some Sansui SP-X9700 4 way speakers which were in sad shape. Everything was blown save for the woofers. Since they had F-Range stamped on the magnets I gave them a listen and they were surprisingly good. They seem just as efficient as Alphas and go a tad lower. I re-dyed them with PE cone paint and use them to add bass to my assortment of FR speakers, cutting them off at 80hz.
I wouldn't doubt that there are many other old Japanese speakers which contain decent FR woofers.

Great idea in recycling instead of just using it as landfill stuffing.

Sadly the landfill claimed the Sansui enclosures, two mids, four horns and six tweets -all dead as a door nail.
Who knows I may eventually build some proper H-frames for these old puppies with something vintage on top.

Good to see. I have a single one of these... waiting for another tomaterialize or find someone that could use a single.

With a baffle that small, it seems you will have considerable front/back cancellation. I would definitely build an "H"-frame around those to create a much more effective configuration.
Cheers,
Dave.

Using a baffle this small allows for an easy conversion to H-frames but as is the bass weight is pretty good.
