O no second SP2 have errors
« on: 10 Dec 2011, 11:12 am »
Because my first SP2 failed I got a new one.
But O no this one is giving me the same problems again.
The volume went to maximum without me touching the remote control.
When I use my DVD or Blu ray player (Dune HD Max) the SP gives me the following error:
SPiTxRecord error
SPiRxRecord error (the T is flashing from T to R)

What do I have to do?

Hi Hoiman,

Boy there must be something strange going on for 2 units to develop the same problem - please contact the distributor.

I had the same problem with my sp2.  I talked to Mike Pickett and sent it in.  Bryston replaced (I forget the part) and a year later I have had no problems.  Sometimes manufactured electrical parts fail.  Not due to bad parts but you will have a few parts fail in a lot of several thousand.  Thats just how it is!The bad part is that said seller gets the bad rap for it when it is not thier fault.  Send it in & have them trouble shoot it.  I had 2 Onkyo's  that did the same thing with the volume pod.  Onkyo replaced the volume control  with  another  unit & it did the same thing.  Make sure you are not getting brown outs or surges in your area.  I have also found that the local power co. can be the culprit.  I now  use a series surge supressor on my equipment.

But is the SP2 out of order or is it just a software problem?
The error just apears when I watch blu rays. The SP2 give this error when the blu ray goes from the previews to the other stuff that is on a blu ray disk and from there to the main menu etc...

If you put the SP2 at another input source and set the right input source when the movie starts nothing happens, no errors, and I can just watch the movie without any problems.

So out of order or a software fault? As you can imagine I don't want to be 3 months without sound, again. That is what happend the last time I brougt the my first SP2 to the distributor.
Myabe I can trade this one with a SP3?

If it is just on the Blueray disc it sounds like it might be a because the Bluray disk is set for HD Dolby?

I don't know where the bluray is set to when I put it in. I think just dolby digital. I just discussed it with my wife and she told me that the last time see wanted to watch a dvd the SP2 hangs after 10 minutes, she had to put the whole power off and after that she could listen for 10 minutes and after that it hangs again. This was also with the Dune Max as player. This weekend I will try my Arcam DVD player and see what happens.

Just a silly suggestion, but one borne of experience, which remote control is he using?  I have a Logitech 1000 that runs the volume all the way up from time to time by continually outputting a signal even though the button is not being depressed.  The remote did this with my SP and, now, with my MX-150.  Just a thought.

..... I just discussed it with my wife and she told me that the last time see wanted to watch a dvd the SP2 hangs after 10 minutes, she had to put the whole power off and after that she could listen for 10 minutes and after that it hangs again.......

I have to admit that the SP2 isn't robust in the face of signal errors.

My Bell satellite set top box causes my SP2 to hang at least once a night when watching TV. The problem occurs when the STB sends an corrupted signal to the SP2. The display can indicate various things, such as DialNorm +14 or whatever, but the sound stops and the SP2 is frozen until I reboot it.

I'm quite use to it, but always had hoped that Bryston would beef up their firmware to take care of this type of problem. Set top boxes are the worse culprits for transmitting garbage and suffering dropouts once in a while, but a processor should always be able to recover. My cheap $800 Denon receiver handles them like a champ. It just doesn't sound as good as the SP2. I doubt much work is being done on the SP2 these days - so I'll live with it.

Hoiman, I suspect your source is the problem with these hang ups. I would have said that even if it was with one SP2. But after two units are enjoying the same problem - not a chance. You've got questionable software feeding less than robust software.

I have tested several DVD's and BluRays this weekend. The conclusion is that it must be the Dune HD MAx that causes the problem.
Everytime I put an BluRay in it I have to wait to put the SP2 in the right source otherwise it will hang. It get the "DialNorm +14" error a lot.
With my Arcam DVD player there wasn't any problem at all.

So the conclusion from "brucek" that it's a software error or input problem must be it.
Strange that this isn't notice at Bryston.
But now it is! So maybe it's possible to built better software, this must be simple to handle by an exception handler.

@Joe Keifer:
The remote is causing the problem of the volume, hmmmm that's interessting because I use an Logitech Harmony 885.
So I will put this one away for a while and see what happens. Thnx for the tip.

So for now I hope we get a robuster software version.

And is there already know if there is comming a trade deal with the SP3, so I can trade the SP2 to an SP3?

Just for fun,,try changing the digital output from your Dune player from bitstream to pcm or vice versa.

Hoiman,

the trade-in deal for the SP3 is valid until 31th December 2011. but please be advised that a 'trade-in' is not an 'update'...so don't expect to get too much for your SP1, SP1.7 or SP2 :(

Hoiman,

the trade-in can bring you only 1000 Euros...depending on what your distributor (dealer) offers you.
everyone who knows about this immense loss of money is not going to pay a huge amount ( even on ebay) anymore i guess.

Why do you want to sell the SP2 if you just purchased it?

Are you using a Dune Max??  If so can you use the 7.1 pre-outs on it for hi-res surround?
