The gist was the fumes from lead-free soldering are actually more dangerous than lead soldering.

Great info.  I don't solder often or for long periods and it also is in a large space in the unfinished portion of the basement.  Usually at most I'm making a pair or two of interconnects now and then.  Never really thought about it much.

I decide to get the Hakko FA400 fume extractor.  I can order it with a high effiency filter that takes out 90% of the fumes.  Thanks for your input everyone.

LOL!  I'm usually smoking a cigar while I solder.  Never noticed any fumes.

But it's very interesting that lead free solder is worse than lead.  :o
Bob
The article you were unable to open discussed the difference between the temperature ranges required for lead vs lead free solder and the flux.  Lead tin melts at 183C, lead free 221, so the connotation "lead free" means a flux which has to work at a higher temperature, so tends to give off more nasty chamicals.

Thanks for that.
My (unscientific) assumption at the time would have been that lead would be nastiest thing you could breathe.

I've been proven wrong.
