BDA1/BDP1 remote system
« on: 28 Oct 2011, 08:22 pm »
hey guys I'm looking at moving in the near future .My question is once I get my theater room set up in the basement.....is there a way of hooking up my bda1,bdp1 to a reciever upstairs and still have it connected to my 4bsst,6bsst,sp-1.7 in the basement . Hope that doesn't sound too confusing   :)

It's really a BDA connection question; the BDP would connect to it right?

I believe the BDA has both RCA and XLR outs.   Depending on distance you could use the RCAs to the nearer preamp and the XLRs to the other.

I use my BDA/BDP as a source for two separate systems.  The balanced out-put can be run for several hundred feet without a problem (according to "pro" sites).   The problem that you may have is "does your receiver have XLR inputs"?, the sp 1.7 doesn't.  I got a Parasound balanced  P3 pre-amp (<$850) to run my outdoor system.

In which case you run a XLR to RCA cable and don't connect the -ve wire but that rather negates the advantage of XLR.

Hadn't thought of that possibility, hence my C- rating. :>).  Does termination of a long balanced run to RCA affect the advantages of long balanced cable runs?

For a system to be balanced it must have both a balanced sending circuit and a balanced receiving circuit if common mode noise rejection etc. is going to be taken advantage off. Also there are a number of ways to build balanced circuits. Bryston uses full differential fully discrete Class A circuits.

So back to the OPs issue, for a long cable run (to  basement, etc.) the "cheat" of using an RCA termination won't work and a pre-amp/receiver with XLR balanced inputs is needed?

Hi Steve

It will work - it just will not be a balanced signal.

thanks everybody...I'm not sure of the distance yet and I don't have a secondary reciever but knowing I can run that kind of distance I can start watching for a decent reciever or preamp/amp with xlr inputs.......probably just be for 2-channel music system. Just trying to plan ahead
thanks
