I'm now tri-amping my hybrid electrostat mains and Ripole subs using a Behringer DCX2496 DSP/crossover.  The subs kick in at 50 hz and below using a 48db LR slope with 6db/oct parametric EQ applied.  The DCX crossover doesn't cost much more than a less capable 3-way analog unit and it provides multiple slope and filter options as well as parametric EQ and digital delay/time alignment... it's pretty incredible, really.

I use Eminent Technology TRW-17 Rotary Subwoofer with my Magneplanar Tympani bass panels.

Now that's impressive. Sort of like a bass freak's wet dream.

I would like to add to my previous post that I realize now how much music
I had been missing, or at least having to fill in with imagination, before I added
the Modjeski subwoofers to my Stax's.  The Stax frequency curves shows usable bass
to 35 hz, although its frequency response is ragged from 35 to 90 or so.  But what I hear now, although not quite so tight and dry, is much more tuneful and solid feeling.
I'm kind of glad i ran in to my problems, since the solution is such an improvement.

This might be a boggler!.I live in a small one room apartment, got a prison like bathroom and tall ceilings.I built a sub woofer from parts from Parts Express. The Titantic woofer, original, brutally enforced cabinet, and a amp called the BASH,made in Canada. Some one said it's what Klipsh uses for their subs. This is a 300 watt,no heat output, very light weight amp for a 150 bucks.I had some prblems with hooking it up.The guy at Parts Express suggested this...2 Y cables,Monsters, from Radio Shack, goldie, good enough. Here goes..the 2 Y cables are plugged into my cd players output. There snug and tight! The cd's output is seperated into 2 different paths. My main amp is a little (BabyDyna-35) putting it's sound to my small monitors, while the other Y cable is feeding the BASH sub amp, which blocks anything signal above 100 hz,or maybe higher, there is a switch for that. The beauty of this is that you can get the great vacuum tube sound of the Dyna, without smearing it thru more electronic components, alas the crossover...I'll take the cable..simple! Before I shut my self off,the best sub woofer tester album I have found is (The Day the Earth Stood Still)Bernard Herrman,1951.I found a re recording by the London Symphony, done in 200?,that will make people in the apt run and cover..Mark Korda

At the price of MMG's I am interested in probably giving them a go only as long as they are truly trade-up-able for 1.7's later as they say.

Given that I listen to rock music, a lot, and yes, gasp, even hip hop at times and various forms of electronic music, I'll want some bass. Heck even jazz sounds terrible if your speakers can't play an upright bass with some oomph.

That said I was pondering the solution of adding some OB subs. Would OB subs be a desirable solution for MMGs (and then 1.7's) or would I prefer to use a closed box subwoofer?

I want something that can play fast and hard and give me lots of midbass kick. Would OB subs + Magnepan provide this you think?

Hopefully I can audition some Magnepans soon, I've never heard any.
