a ford pick-up a redneck ferrari?  hmmm...  i always thought *all* pickups were, um, well, redneck commuters!   :)   the lightning yust happens to be a fast one!

i had always considered my de tomaso pantera to be a redneck ferrari.  after all, it's an italian exotic that came stock w/a ford 351 cleveland!   :D   i've had mine ~5 years, & i still dunno how to operate the cd changer in it, and the radio has only been turned on about three times.  when one of the speaker grilles kept coming off the speaker, i finally ripped the speaker out, & yust screwed the grille doen into the door to cover the hole.   for toons, ya yust use yer right foot!

I used to subscribe to Road and Track in the early 70's and I remember quite clearly Ford's full page ads advertising brand spanking new Panteras (the ones in the ads were always yellow)  for $10,000.00. If I would have had $10k at age 17.....

Updated view of the SLA-1 amplifier innards
« Reply #82 on: 9 Jul 2003, 02:18 pm »
I have updated my http://www.angelfire.com/ca/rchau/audio/sla-1.html#1.3">SLA-1 Page with a description of the various input gain stage, volume control section and amplifier section.

The amplifier does not use a DC servo to block DC from the input to the output and uses an op-amp based pre-driver section for the output stage.

Overall a very clean and clever design.

I don't want to count my chickens before the eggs hatch, but just wanted fellow member of the circle interested in the ART SLA-1 to see this response to doug s posted as a reply to another topic .....

'My DNA modified ART SLA-1 should be delivered next week along with Wayne's MENSA ART DI/O (DAC) audition pack and a Chris Own dAck (DAC) closely on its heels. I wonder how the ART x 2 combination would sound with the Diluceo's?

Let me know by PM if you are interested in figuring out a way to hook up for some listening. A few other MD-DE-PA(Philly) circle members have expressed interest in hearing the ART x 2 combination.

I have some vacation time schedule in August with plans for extensive listening. Not sure how the DNA ART SLA-1 amp will drive my full range Vandersteen 2ce signatures -may be great, but also may work better with a monitor like the Diluceo's, Dave Ellis 1801's, VMPS 626's or Onix Ref. 1's. Anyone within driving distance of Wilmington, DE who might be interested in hearing the the DNA ART SLA-1's please drop me a PM. So far jeffjazz and Jack Straw have expressed some interest."

I'll be getting mine at the same time Nature Boy gets his, and if anyone in Eugene wants to hear it, I'll gladly bring the amp to your house so I can hear what it sounds like in someone else's rig. Don has pictures posted now at www.dn-audio.com of his modded amp.

It is great to finally be able to see the exo-skeleton of the DNA modded unit.

Before I start, I looked at Don's updated web site and noted his new switch to route the unbalanced connection. From this and other adevertised changes, I sense some genuine improvements should result...as was the case of key recommendations for the DI/O.

I'll just say that I'm no industrial desgner but from the wanting photos, the unit looks like it could use a makeover: I really  like the understated "thin" look of the stock SLA-1 unit and would have left well enough alone and have tried to make it less tall. I estimate from the photos that the new top will add about 5 and a quarter inches. Which means that it stands about 7 inches in height on a shelf....even my tall Target shelfs will have a problem fitting them...If it did fit, there be no room for the venting slots on the new shell to do much good. Any chance of a lower form factor in the future, Don ?

The new unit very proudly proclaims the use of "ELECTRONICALLY REGULATED POWER SUPPLY"  on a reflective fascia that seems uneven in the photo...it reminds me of the early 80's Japanese Recievers which embraced transistors and proudly proclaimed "ICs inside".  The photos are  blurry but muted in colour.  As mentioned, the new top pretty much demands carpet mounting or taking the top shelf of your stand. To remind your family that Don has enriched your life, the new top has a 4x2 inch logo place pronouncing "DNA" (1 inch font) , then "DONALD NANCE AUDIO" (1/3 inch font) , then "YOUR GENETIC CODE FOR GREAT HEARING" (1/4" font) ....all uppercase:  Like I said, both I and my wife like the understated look of the stock SLA-1.

As they say, it is what's inside that counts. I hope the new power supply caps work out well enough to justify the dramatic change to the SLA-1 aesthetics...a price trodden by many consumer eager to sample the wares of a proud designer....we will know better by next week.

Just put my Sla-1 back in the chain as my main amp is due for open heart.

I tried a newly purchased Audience pc on the little bugger and wow...more inner detail, slightly wider and quite a bit deeper soundstage right off the bat.
The pc also reduces the sometimes sibilent top end of the Sla-1.

I had been reading that the Audience pc is usually best placed on amps and I must say that I have never heard obvious ,instant change after an amp pc change, at least not to this degree.

Marbles,

Based on my conversations with Don Nance last Friday, Eric the Red should get his amp sometime this week, before I receive mine.  :(  After putting my amp through some electronic torture tests Don found my amp had some "bias drift" thought to be due to a weak transitor.

Don's e-mail comments - "I think it came from the factory with a weak transistor, I have replaced it, but  I still want to monitor it (seems to have a drifty bias) a bit longer. Would you be terribly upset if I asked if I could ship yours next week?"

It's been a bit longer wait than expected, but I give Don the benefit of the doubt as he is trying to get everything right.  If I don't get my amp by this Friday, I will not be able to post any impressions until the week of August 17 as I'll be on vacation.

Hopefully Eric the Red has his ears on and will provide inquiring AC minds with some impressions.  BTW, Wayne W. has a stock SLA-1 unit for sale listed in the appropriate area.

Sorry I don't have more information to offer you folks.  Stay tuned.

Mine should be here Friday (if Fedex doesn't get lost again) and has already been burned in for 72 hours. I ordered the full meal deal so it's going back to Don (he's paying for shipping both ways) as soon as he gets the new 17" faceplates in for installation of the Shalcos.
