Peak,

Thanks for you responses about SLA-1 and your informative website. They've been tremendously helpful in trying to suss out the architecture.
Yet another question -

On your site - http://www.angelfire.com/ca/rchau/audio/sla-1.html

on the bottom right photo, there appears to be an IC(s) framed by the crossing brown wires, just to the left of those small electrolytics that the brown wires appear to be resting upon, what are they?

Thanks in advance, yet again,
Paul

This part is a second source for (I think) a NEC UPC1237ha chip.  I could not find much info on it yet but I think it is some sort of relay driver that decides when the breaker opens in case of weird conditions such as over current, over temp, etc. It might be a product of car audio gear and also provide the logic for the "signal", "clipping" and "protection" LEDs. I guess a schematic would help sort some of this out.

Anyone out there with experience using this chip ?

d911,

.... ..., and the horse you came in on.

Tough crowd.

Any AudioCircle members regularly participate in protests?  If not, there is the slightest chance that there are some things in the real world that could use your effort.  Certain politicians may even pay for your work.

I'm not sure if the picketers have left d911's residence yet, but it took me a full ten minutes this morning to remove all the pamphlets from my windshield this morning.  There were only a couple people blocking my driveway when I finally cleared off my car -- one guy was irate, one guy was friendly and respectful which I appreciated, but he then tried to sell me a different amplifier.  The last guy offered me a t-shirt, but I didn't have any money on me at the time.

Meanwhile, across town, a man read a rave review of an overpriced interconnect with no return policy from a large company, sight unseen, that in addition to promising amazing sound, also promised to cure male pattern baldness.  The man felt terrific about the purchase.

PeAk,

Again, thanks for poviding truly useful information on the SLA-1.

The mpc1237 contain a (darlington?) relay driver. It is described by Nec as a "Protector IC for Stereo Amplifier", and would appear to implement the protection, startup... facilities. It can monitor voltage(clipping), current (shorts and low impedance loads), power availability (unplugged), as well as output dc offset and provides turn-on delay and the means to control the relay when these functions are triggered.

Its function and application is fully described in the following PDF -
http://www.promelec.ru/pdf/upc1237ha.pdf

Sorry about the Xeroxed quality, but I could only find the datasheet at this Roosh'n site.

PS- PeAk, are there one or two of them suckers?

hello cjr888,

i know i'm probably being overly sensitive but some ppl take offence to comparisons between the special olympics and internet arguments.

i was at an education support school today with 'special' kids and they just simply don't deserve this type of comparison.  can't we pick on someone who can defend themselves, just my humble opinion.

Um, given that we have a "no-edit" policy on this site, I'm not sure there's much that Admin can do about that one at this point... you might have to work with cjr888 on it...

cjr888, that was too much.  You should think about editing that one.

ETR, the borg is asking Peak to mod the tweeker/geekers circle (which I think would be a great idea).  Occam and Peak are only discussing a few electronic pars and circuts.  sssiesch. <-- or however you spell that word.

:o  quote from etr-Rosconey, what the hell are you talking about? This is a post on the stock SLA1.

:o quote etr-This thing's going to Don Nance for his full mods including new attenuators in the morning.

um i guess i do know what the hell i'm talking about.

i still  dont think that little cheap amp with 500 $ or more worth of mods will be as good as the small odyssey, new norh, leamp, aska.you know ones with warranties.and thats what the hell i'm talking about

roscony, i would be hesitant to speculate, if only because of the experience i have had w/my art di/o.  i have ~$350 into it (and it would now be ~$100 less to duplicate, since i wouldn't now re-do a few things), and it's easily the equal of digital gear up to ~$5k.  of course, some may prefer a scott nixon toob dac, channel islands dac, electrocompaniet cdp, resolution audio cdp, etc - at this quality level, system synergy & preference plays a roll.

I've started a technical thread on the LAB section for discussion of the innards of the SLA-1.

I'm done on this thread. If anyone owes anyone an apology its cjr 888 to the people who saw what he posted on his previous reply earlier on this thread before he edited it out. That kind of crap is all over the net and I try and stay as far away from it as possible. Please don't post any replies in the future to any of my threads here cjr 888.

Cool, thanks for that NB. Quite an amusing writer. But he seems to be thinking that he had his fun and now he's going back to his big amps. Chance for someone to get a bargain maybe ;)

I like a review from someone with a good sense of humor.  The ART SLA-1 review has this in spades.  Enjoy.

I had a gooooood listen last night and agree that it is a remarkable value ...make that just plain remarkable. In my system,  the SLA-1 forms a  mighty fine partnership based on  hearing it evaluated using some high quality reference recordings going through a friend's recently tweaked DI/O. Read my http://www.angelfire.com/ca/rchau/audio/sla-1.html#day4n">review of last night's 5 hour listening session .

For members of Yahoo Group's DIOMODS, various spec sheets on the components (4558, UPC1237) and the SLA-1 User's Guide have been uploaded to the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DIOmods/files/Art%20SLA-1%20Amp%20stuff/">file section of the Diomods group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DIOmods/files/Art%20SLA-1%20Amp%20stuff/

Due to the low traffic with regard to new DI/O posts, I think it would be a good alternative to posting detailed mods about the SLA-1 in preference to the LAB section in this forum...it has far better  facilities. I've asked the moderators to see what they think and will upload more stuff pending further approval.

Enjoy,

(Note: This is a modified cross post from the Lab circle but it fits in here with the emphasis on recent reviews of the SLA-1)

I caught your thank you on your angelfire site. you're welcome. This post  is not to indicate that the owner/publisher of angelfire.com has one of my modified amps, but only to say your welcome for a thanks he directed my way for bringing attention to the ART SLA-1 amplifier.

Anyone have any opinions on which of these would be a better bet??

I am playing with my home setup and would like to try an inexpensive high power amp...

Thanks,
