This veneer is called Danauk. I was using teak oil on it to protect from UV.

It looks like VeneerSupplies.com is not selling it any more or I would link to the vendor where I bought it.

UPDATE: Somehow, I managed to get the name of the veneer wrong. It is actually Padauk which is called out below.

Not heard of that one.  Padauk, heard of that.

Probably wouldn't hurt to wipe it down with a light mineral spirits on a shop towel or rag. Mineral spirits won't do any harm, just enough to damped the surface as you wipe it off.  MS will dry off and not leave any marks.  Give it 15-20 minutes to dry off.

I strongly believe I need to follow your advice about using mineral spirits because when I put poly on my sample, the brush picked up some pigment from the surface. I vacuumed and used tack cloth, but I don't think that was clean enough, obviously.

Seems a little odd if you didn't stain or apply dye, might be fine sawdust.  Mineral spirits won't hurt anything just don't get it real wet, keep it pretty dry on the cloth.  I don't use veneer much so I don't have a great feel for how veneer reacts to how I would treat solid wood. I'm assuming mineral spirits won't interact negatively with the veneer adhesive (don't remember how your was attached).

If needed, you might be able to take a real dilute shellac (like a half-pound cut..3 parts ethanol + one part sealcoat) and wipe it on with a lint free cloth or blue shop towel.  I'd think you could coat the side of a speaker quick enough to avoid over-laps.  Often..finishing comes down to experiments to work out techniques.  A light coat of shellac may seal things up well enough.

Ok, the finish is applied and in the curing stage. I can work on them again in a few weeks. Without this project to work on, I don't know what to do with my time.  :|

Not heard of that one.  Padauk, heard of that.

Quarter sawn Padauk is what this veneer is.  Danauk is simply a marketing name used by this vendor to make it seem "more exotic".

Well, that explains it.  It does look a lot like padauk..I guess that's why.

Maybe that explains why it said Danauk on the site and Padauk on my invoice.

While waiting for polyurethane to cure, I started some work on the stands. The bottom of one had a defect that was easily fixed with Bondo Wood Filler. What I discovered when applying DuraTex is that it doesn't cover the wood filler. I can see a shadow of the wood filler through the speaker paint where it was applied.

I will primer the whole stand before any more DuraTex is applied. Hopefully the DuraTex can cover the defects if primer is applied first.

UPDATE: After 4 coats, the wood filler is mostly hidden but you can see it if you know where to look. On the other stand, I applied primer first and you are not able to see any repairs after applying Duratex.

The polyurethane is cured on the speakers so I can continue the build process this weekend.

The tops, bottoms, and sides are sanded and waxed. I will wax the backs after the Duratex is cured. Getting the Duratex to meet with the veneer was an interesting challenge.
