So reading through the older parts of the thread have me intrigued. The statements about the X-Omni being better than the X-LS Encore are also interesting as I'm considering building the Encores. How is the X-Omni different than the A/V-O? And am I correct in assuming the X-Omni or A/V-O would need as much breathing room as say the X-Statik?

The X-Omni uses the slightly larger M-165 woofer compared to the M-130 woofer on the A/V-O. And they use a different tweeter. But the design type is the same and both sound very good.

And any omni style speaker needs to be at least three feet from any wall.

What happens if these are positioned less than 3 feet from the wall?

The drywall will melt. Can only be used that way with concrete structures.

If they're too close to a wall the reflections off the wall will add to the sound and smear it.  It just won't sound good.  The proper positioning of them for the best sound is away from the walls.

That being said if you're using them for surround channels in a home theater then it doesn't matter as much.  I used them like that for a few years and they worked well.  But for front channel use definitely give them space.

I have another question. I realize the X-Omni and A/V-O need space because of wall reflections but with if (and this might be a dumb idea) they were mounted on 45 degree baffle? (almost like a floor standing Spica) Would there be any benefit from that? Like would it add some omni flavor but allow placement a little closer to the wall?

I'd like to know too.

There are a number of speakers that do something similar but at a variety of angles:

Direct Acoustics Silent Speaker II

Allison model 7

Epicure Model 20

Shahinian Compass

Heed Audio Enigma

Larsen speakers

Sonab speakers

These don't tilt the baffle but they do tilt the driver.

Wow, what a collection! The Sonab and Larsen look like " what the hell, let's try it all" designs. The Larsen in particular appears to use some directivity control in that uppermost tweeter, although it could be a trackball...

Changing the mounting angle has no effect on placement. Those ranges below 1kHz start getting very omni directional and then they need to be far enough away from a wall so as not to have direct cancellation.

Thanks for the info and link Danny.  A lot of it is over my head but I appreciate it anyway!
